🧱 Materijali

⚠ Program nema fiksnih jedinica; baza materijala je u osnovnim SI jedinicama (m, kg, s, N, Pa). E i G su u Pa = N/m², gustina ρ u kg/m³; uz njih su mase u kg, sile u N i krutosti u N/m. Ako koristite bazu, unosite sve u SI; sopstveni materijal unesite u svom saglasnom sistemu (npr. E u kPa = kN/m² i ρ u t/m³).

Dužine i koordinate (y₀, z₀) u m; površine A₁, A₂, A₃ u m²; momenti inercije I₁ (It), I₂, I₃, I₂₃ u m⁴; sektorski moment inercije Iw (Cw) u m⁶. Tablične vrednosti su preračunate u ovaj sistem: cm²→m² ×10⁻⁴, cm⁴→m⁴ ×10⁻⁸, cm⁶→m⁶ ×10⁻¹², mm→m ×10⁻³ - pa se slažu sa bazom materijala (Pa, kg/m³) i daju sile u N. Predefinisani profili su prema: EN 10365 (IPE, IPN, HE, HD, HP, UPE, UPN), EN 10034:1993 (tolerancije I i H), EN 10024:1995 (IPN), EN 10279:2000 (U), EN 10056-1:1998 / -2:1994 (L ugaonici). IPE 100: I_t = 1,20 cm⁴ ovde, 1,16 cm⁴ u tablicama ArcelorMittal).

2DOF sistem - primarna masa + TMD (Tuned Mass Damper)

Kontrolni proračuni (Kontrola 1 i 2)
Kontrola 1 - primarni sistem bez prigušenja (c = 0, ζd,min = 0), opt 1-7
Formule: f = 1/(1+μ),   ζd = √(3μ / (8(1+μ)))
Den Hartog: (c/cc)² = 3μ/(8(1+μ)³), cc = 2·md·ω₀; ovde preračunato na ζd = cd/(2·md·ωd), ωd = √(kd/md).
Izvor: J. P. Den Hartog, „Mechanical Vibrations”, 3. izdanje, McGraw-Hill, New York, 1947, §24 „The Damped Vibration Absorber”, str. 119-132 (optimalno prigušenje: str. 130-131). Prikazuje grafik poređenja i tabelu rezultata. Korisno za validaciju numeričkog rešenja.

Pasivna kontrola - Tuned Mass Damper (TMD)
U svakom koraku globalni postupak (PSw, DE, SA, PSe) radi sa Niter,k = round(0.7·Niter) iteracija (Niter - upisani „Maks. broj iteracija").

FFT analiza
FFT analiza signala
Program učitava signal iz txt fajla (jedna kolona signala uz korak Δt iz polja, ili dve kolone t, x sa stalnim korakom; decimalni zarez, „;” i red zaglavlja su dozvoljeni), vrši prethodnu obradu (uklanjanje trenda, srednje vrednosti, Hanov prozor) i izračunava: amplitudni spektar, kvadrat amplitudnog spektra |A(f)|², PSD (FFT metoda) i PSD (Welch metoda sa segmentacijom).
Prethodna obrada signala
Oduzima pravu provučenu metodom najmanjih kvadrata (drift, npr. pomeranje sa pomakom nule); bez toga drift „curi” u najniže frekvencije spektra. Prava ima i slobodni član, pa uklanjanje linearnog trenda uklanja i srednju vrednost (Σs_i = 0 posle obrade).
Oduzima srednju vrednost signala: uklanja liniju f = 0 i njeno curenje u susedne linije.

Redosled rada: u tabu Model zadajte geometriju, materijale, preseke, granične uslove, dejstva i mase i kliknite „▶ Pripremi model” → tabovi Statička, Dinamička i Spektralna analiza odgovora i Pasivna kontrola - TMD preuzimaju model dugmetom „Učitaj podatke iz taba Model”.

FEM analysis - what the program does

Author: Andrija Rašeta

Release: 2026-11-03

An educational program for linear and geometrically nonlinear static analysis, stability analysis and linear dynamic analysis of three-dimensional frame structures by the finite element method (FEM), with companion tools for response spectra, tuned mass dampers (TMD) and frequency analysis of signals.

Workflow: in the Model tab enter the geometry, materials, sections, boundary conditions, loads and masses and click “▶ Prepare model” → the Static, Dynamic and Response Spectrum Analysis tabs and Passive Control - TMD import the model with “Load data from the Model tab”. Static Response Analysis works only with the model; the other tabs also accept manually entered data. Response Spectrum, 2-DOF TMD and FFT Analysis are stand-alone tabs (2-DOF TMD and FFT Analysis can take data from Dynamic Response Analysis). A project (all tabs) is saved and loaded as a single .txt file; results are exported to XML (Excel 2003), TXT and JPG.

Units: the program uses no fixed units - enter all quantities in one consistent system (e.g. m, kg, s → N, Pa; or m, t, s → kN, kPa); the results are in the same system, so input fields, tables and plots carry no unit labels (except angles in degrees, where marked). The material database, the section catalogue and the default values (e.g. g = 9.81) are in base SI units (m, kg, s, N, Pa); if you use them, enter everything in SI. The period T is in the time unit of the consistent system and the frequency f = 1/T in the reciprocal time unit (s and Hz only if time is in seconds); the circular frequency is ω = 2π·f.

Symbols and the result format are given in the “Symbols and format” sub-tab.

5: U (C2)). Brzina i ubrzanje komponente imaju tačku, odnosno dve tačke iznad oznake (U̇, Ü, Θ̇_X). Mase u čvoru su mX, mY, mZ (translacione) i JX, JY, JZ (maseni momenti inercije). Presečne sile u LKS: N, T2, T3, M1, M2, M3 i bimoment B.

Globalne ose X, Y, Z (desni sistem) i lokalne ose štapa 1, 2, 3: osa 1 je osa štapa od čvora i ka čvoru j, a ose 2 i 3 leže u ravni poprečnog preseka (desni sistem); njihov položaj menja rotacija LKS oko ose 1.

Format rezultata (isti u svim tabovima):

  • Cifre: brojevi u tabelama i porukama imaju 6 značajnih cifara, natpisi vrednosti i brojevi u naslovima grafika 4, izvoz (TXT, XML nizova i vrhova) 12; dijagnostičke veličine rešavača (‖r‖/‖F‖, odnos pivota, Sp, tolerancija) 3; procenti 2 decimale, osim procene tačnosti postupka u tabu Spektar odgovora (mala odstupanja, npr.
  • Zapis: običan za 10-3 ≤ |x| < 106, a van toga eksponencijalni, npr. 1.23457e-4 ili 2.5e+7 (isti zapis „e" je i na osama grafika, bez SI prefiksa); nula je „0", minus je „-", beskonačno „∞", nedefinisano „-".
  • Tabele: isti izgled zaglavlja i slova; brojevi su poravnati desno, a oznake (prva kolona, opisi) levo. U tabovima Model i Statička veličinu slova menja polje za veličinu teksta.
  • Grafici: isti font i veličine, svetlosiva mreža, podebljane oznake i brojevi na osama (naslov vremenskih grafika i spektara 14 px; naslov 2D/3D dijagrama konstrukcije je manji, jer je duži, i prati polje „veličina grafičkih simbola"); naslov ima redom: šta je prikazano · izbor (stepen slobode, postupak, slučaj, ζ…) · max = … (gde/kada) · min = … · razmera ili normiranje. Boje vrsta veličina su iste u svim tabovima: pomeranje, brzina, ubrzanje, sila, ubrzanje tla ag; na graficima poređenja bez TMD-a i sa TMD-om (2-DOF TMD i Pasivna kontrola), referenca/poređenje (Den Hartog, Welch); maksimum je označen crveno, a minimum plavo, a natpis ekstrema prati svoju tačku pri zumiranju. U tabu Spektar odgovora svaki spektar ima svoju boju, a vrsta linije razlikuje spektre ubrzanja: Sa isprekidana, Saa puna, pseudo-spektri Spv i Spa crta-tačka-crta.

Symbols

Displacement component symbols (the same in both languages): in the global axes X, Y, Z (GCS) the displacements are U, V, W and the rotations ΘX, ΘY, ΘZ (in menus, plots and exports: Θ_X, Θ_Y, Θ_Z); in the local member axes 1, 2, 3 (x, y, z; LCS) the displacements are u, v, w and the rotations θ1, θ2, θ3; warping is θ1′ (the derivative of the twist angle along the member axis). A degree of freedom in GCS is labelled by component and node, e.g. U (C2) or Θ_X (C2), with the code number where it exists (e.g. 5: U (C2)). Velocity and acceleration of a component carry one or two dots above the symbol (U̇, Ü, Θ̇_X). The largest total nodal displacement is max √(U² + V² + W²); component extremes are written as max |U|, min V, max |W|. In dynamic response tables and plots u, u̇, ü are the displacement, velocity and acceleration of a translation, and θ, θ̇, θ̈ the angle, angular velocity and angular acceleration of a rotation of the DOF in the first column; the subscript rel denotes the response relative to the ground and abs the absolute response (relative + ground motion). Nodal masses are mX, mY, mZ (translational) and JX, JY, JZ (mass moments of inertia). Internal forces in the LCS: N, T2, T3, M1, M2, M3 and the bimoment B.

Global axes X, Y, Z (right-handed) and local member axes 1, 2, 3: axis 1 is the member axis from node i to node j, and axes 2 and 3 lie in the plane of the cross-section (right-handed); their position is changed by the LCS rotation about axis 1.

Result format (the same in all tabs):

  • Digits: numbers in tables and messages have 6 significant digits, value labels and numbers in plot titles 4, exports (TXT, XML of arrays and peaks) 12; solver diagnostics (‖r‖/‖F‖, pivot ratio, Sp, tolerance) 3; percentages 2 decimals, except the accuracy estimate of the method in the Response Spectrum tab (small deviations, e.g. 0.0232 %), which has 3 significant digits. Trailing zeros are not written (0.5, not 0.500000).
  • Decimal separator: every number computed by the program (tables, plots, messages, exports) uses a point, in both languages - so a number can be copied unchanged into Excel, MATLAB or Python; a comma appears only in fixed Serbian text (e.g. “ζ = 0,05”).
  • Notation: plain for 10-3 ≤ |x| < 106, otherwise exponential, e.g. 1.23457e-4 or 2.5e+7 (the same “e” notation is used on plot axes, without SI prefixes); zero is “0”, minus is “-”, infinity “∞”, undefined “-”.
  • Tables: the same header and font; numbers are right-aligned, labels (first column, descriptions) left-aligned. In the Model and Static tabs the font size follows the text-size field.
  • Plots: the same font and sizes, light grey grid, bold axis labels and tick labels (the title of time-history and spectrum plots is 14 px; the title of 2D/3D structure diagrams is smaller, because it is longer, and follows the “graphic symbol size” field); the title contains, in this order: what is shown · selection (DOF, method, case, ζ…) · max = … (where/when) · min = … · scale or normalisation. Quantity colours are the same in all tabs: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, ground acceleration ag; on comparison plots without TMD and with TMD (2-DOF TMD and Passive Control), reference/comparison (Den Hartog, Welch); the maximum is marked red and the minimum blue, and the extreme-value label follows its point when zooming. In the Response Spectrum tab every spectrum has its own colour, and the line style distinguishes the acceleration spectra: Sa dashed, Saa solid, pseudo-spectra Spv and Spa dash-dot. On 2D/3D structure diagrams the size of text and symbols follows the “graphic symbol size” field, and the scale (common or per drawing) is written in the title.
  • Messages: an error (the analysis or action is not performed) and a warning when an analysis or action is started (performed with a reservation) are shown in the common box above the tabs, with the prefix “Error:” / “Warning:” (a notice has the prefix “Note:”); when the box is out of view, the same message also appears at the bottom of the screen. Warnings (⚠) and notes (ℹ, blue box) that refer to results are shown in the tab, next to the table or plot they refer to (e.g. warnings about damping and the time step Δt above the Dynamic Response Analysis results table, notes and the accuracy estimate in the Response Spectrum tab).
  • Export: XML (Excel 2003) of tables gives the values as on screen, and the full value where the cell carries it (matrices, extremes with their time); plot arrays (TXT) and spectra have 12 significant digits.

Baza materijala, katalog profila i podrazumevano g = 9,81 su u osnovnim SI jedinicama (m, kg, s, N, Pa); ako ih koristite, unosite sve u SI.

  1. Zadajte pomoćnu mrežu, pa nacrtajte čvorove (⊕ Čvor) i štapove (╱ Linijski element ili ⊞ Unesi linijski KE). Radite u 2D prikazu (ravni XZ, XY, YZ) ili u 3D prikazu.
  2. Definišite materijale (🧱 Materijal) i poprečne preseke (▬ Poprečni presek) i pridružite ih štapovima (🔗 Pridruži svojstva); po potrebi zadajte rotaciju LKS i oslobađanja veza (⟲ Oslobađanje veza).
  3. Zadajte granične uslove (⊥ Granični uslovi, ≈ Elastični oslonac).
  4. Napravite slučajeve dejstva (📋 Slučajevi dejstva: statičko, dinamičko ili akcelerogram), pridružite vrednosti čvorovima i KE i sastavite kombinacije (➕ Kombinacije dejstava).
  5. Izaberite izvore mase (unos u čvorove - ⊙ Koncentrisana masa, mase iz gustine, maseni momenti inercije štapa), po potrebi uključite vitoperenje (🌀 Vitoperenje (Vlasov)) i zadajte broj tonova i Rejlijevo prigušenje.

IPE 100: It = 1,20 cm⁴ ovde, 1,16 cm⁴ u tablicama ArcelorMittal). Vrednosti su preračunate u osnovne SI jedinice: cm²→m² ×10⁻⁴, cm⁴→m⁴ ×10⁻⁸, cm⁶→m⁶ ×10⁻¹², mm→m ×10⁻³.
  • Množioci preseka: množioci krutosti (A₁, A₂, A₃, I₁, I₂, I₃, Iw) množe karakteristiku pre ulaska u matricu krutosti; množilac mase μm množi masu ρ·A·L i masene momente inercije štapa iz gustine, a množilac sopstvene težine μ_G težinu q = ρ·A·g - obe računate iz nemnoženih karakteristika.
  • Granični uslovi: kruti i elastični oslonci, uključujući vitoperenje; oslobađanja N, T2, T3, M1, M2, M3, B i elastične (polukrute) veze.
U apsolutnom odgovoru (i animaciji) svim čvorovima se u pravcu akcelerograma dodaje kretanje tla: pomeranje ug i brzina u̇g dobijeni integracijom ag(t) i ubrzanje ag(t).

Mreža KE: štap i njegova podela

Analize i metode

Prostorni gredni KE (Ojler-Bernuli, Timošenko) i direktni postupak krutosti

Šta je i kada: KE sa dva čvora i 6 stepeni slobode po čvoru (U, V, W, ΘX, ΘY, ΘZ). Ojler-Bernulijev element zanemaruje smičuće deformacije (vitki štapovi); Timošenkov ih uzima u obzir (kratki i visoki štapovi).

Pomeranja i rotacije su U, V, W, ΘX, ΘY, ΘZ u GKS, a u, v, w, θ1, θ2, θ3 u LKS.
K = Σe ΛeT·ke·Λe , K·u = F ; Φs = 12·E·I/(G·As·L2)

ke - matrica krutosti KE u LKS (12×12), Λe - matrica transformacije (kosinusi pravaca osa 1, 2, 3, uz rotaciju LKS), K - matrica krutosti sistema, u - vektor pomeranja, F - vektor opterećenja; Φs - parametar smicanja Timošenkovog elementa (E - modul elastičnosti, G - modul smicanja, I - moment inercije za osu savijanja, As - smičuća površina A2 ili A3 za odgovarajući pravac, L - dužina KE); za Ojler-Bernulijev element Φs = 0.

Pretpostavke: linearno elastičan materijal, prizmatičan KE, mala pomeranja i deformacije; poprečni presek ostaje ravan.

U programu: matrice KE se sklapaju direktnim postupkom krutosti po kodnim brojevima (aktivni i pasivni stepeni slobode); I23 ≠ 0 nesimetričnih preseka ulazi u matricu krutosti; oslobađanja veza ulaze statičkom kondenzacijom matrice KE.

Ograničena torzija (vitoperenje, Vlasov)

Šta je i kada: torzija tankozidnih otvorenih preseka (I, U, L…) kod kojih je vitoperenje sprečeno (uklještenje, kruta veza) - pojavljuju se bimoment B i torzija vitoperenja Mw.

E·Iw·θ1⁗ - G·It·θ1″ = mt ; B = -E·Iw·θ1″ ; Mt = Msv + Mw = G·It·θ1′ - E·Iw·θ1‴

θ1 - ugao uvijanja (rotacija preseka oko ose štapa); θ1′, θ1″, θ1‴, θ1⁗ - prvi do četvrti izvod ugla uvijanja po koordinati duž ose štapa (θ1′ je mera vitoperenja); E - modul elastičnosti, G - modul smicanja, Iw - sektorski moment inercije, It - torziona konstanta, mt - podeljeni moment torzije (po jedinici dužine štapa), B - bimoment, Mt - ukupni moment torzije, Msv = G·It·θ1′ - moment slobodne (Sen-Venanove) torzije, Mw = -E·Iw·θ1‴ - moment torzije usled sprečenog vitoperenja.

Inercija vitoperenja: uz opciju „inercija Jω” stepen slobode θ1′ ostaje dinamički DOF sa Jω = ρ·Iw·L/2 u svaki čvor KE (samo uz mase iz gustine i masene momente inercije štapa; ρ - gustina, Iw - sektorski moment inercije, L - dužina KE) i, za uneti maseni moment inercije čvora, Jω = Josa·Iw/(I2+I3), gde je Josa = Σk e1,k2·Jk (e1 - jedinični vektor ose štapa, Jk - uneti JX, JY, JZ; I2, I3 - momenti inercije preseka).

Matrica mase i statička kondenzacija (Guyan)

m = ρ·A·L/2 (u svaki čvor KE) ; Kc = Kbb - Kbn·Knn-1·Knb

ρ - gustina, A - površina preseka, L - dužina KE; Kc - kondenzovana matrica krutosti dinamičkog modela, indeks b - bitni stepeni slobode (sa masom ili masenim momentom inercije), n - nebitni stepeni slobode (bez mase). Maseni momenti inercije štapa: J1 = ρ·(I2+I3)·L/2, J2 = ρ·I2·L/2, J3 = ρ·I3·L/2.

Modalna analiza

Šta je i kada: sopstvene frekvencije i oblici neprigušenih slobodnih oscilacija - osnova modalne superpozicije, spektralne analize i Rejlijevog prigušenja.

(K - ωn2·M)·φn = 0 ; ΦT·M·Φ = I , ΦT·K·Φ = diag(ωn2) ; Tn = 2π/ωn , fn = 1/Tn

General notes

The Model tab builds a three-dimensional model of a frame structure from line finite elements (FE) and prepares the static, dynamic and modal models used by the analysis tabs. The program never assigns boundary conditions or properties to nodes and elements by itself: the model contains only what you enter, and “Model check” reports what is missing.

  • Units: no fixed units - enter coordinates, properties, loads and masses in one consistent system; the results are in the same system. The material database, the section catalogue and the default g = 9.81 are in base SI units (m, kg, s, N, Pa); if you use them, enter everything in SI. The check of ρ against E (below the ρ field and in ‘Model check’) is only informative (Note): it compares the longitudinal wave speed c = √(E/ρ) (E - modulus of elasticity, ρ - density) with the usual range c ≈ 3000-6000 for length in m and time in s (c ≈ 3·10⁶-6·10⁶ for length in mm); in another consistent system, ignore the note.

How to work

  1. Set up the grid, then draw nodes (⊕ Node) and members (╱ Line element or ⊞ Add line FE). Work in a 2D view (XZ, XY, YZ planes) or in the 3D view.
  2. Define materials (🧱 Material) and cross-sections (▬ Cross-section) and assign them to members (🔗 Assign properties); set the LCS rotation and end releases (⟲ End releases) where needed.
  3. Enter the boundary conditions (⊥ Boundary conditions, ≈ Elastic support).
  4. Create load cases (📋 Load cases: static, dynamic or accelerogram), assign values to nodes and elements and build combinations (➕ Load combinations).
  5. Choose the mass sources (nodal input ⊙ Lumped mass, masses from density, member mass moments of inertia), switch on warping if needed (🌀 Warping (Vlasov)) and set the number of modes and Rayleigh damping.
  6. Divide the members into elements (⚙ Mesh all line elements), click “Model check”, then “▶ Prepare model”. The analysis tabs then import the model.

Model data:

  • Element: 3D Euler-Bernoulli or Timoshenko beam (chosen per section); 6 DOFs per node, 7 with warping θ1′ (non-uniform torsion, Vlasov).
  • Local member axes: axis 1 from node i to node j; axis 2 is the part of the global +Z axis normal to axis 1 (for a vertical member, deviating from Z by less than 10-3 rad, +X is used instead of +Z); axis 3 = axis 1 × axis 2 (right-handed system). An LCS rotation by the angle β about axis 1 is positive by the right-hand rule: axis 2 turns towards axis 3, i.e. counter-clockwise when viewed against axis 1 (from node j towards node i).
  • Sections: general (manual input), I (including unequal flanges), U, rectangle, box, circle, tube, L, T, inverted T; IPE (including IPE A, IPE O), IPN, HE (A, AA, B, M and heavy HE), HD, HP, UPE, UPN, U and L catalogues. Computes A, A2, A3, It, I2, I3, I23, principal axes, Iw and the shear centre; stiffness, mass and self-weight multipliers are set per section.
  • Section catalogue: the predefined profiles follow EN 10365 (IPE, IPN, HE, HD, HP, UPE, UPN), EN 10034:1993 (I and H tolerances), EN 10024:1995 (IPN), EN 10279:2000 (channels) and EN 10056-1:1998 / -2:1994 (L angles). The tabulated properties (A, Avz, I, It, Iw) are taken from “Tablice profila EC” (odseknis.akademijanis.edu.rs); the standards specify dimensions and tolerances, not It and Iw. Tables of different publishers differ in It by up to a few percent because of how the root fillets are included (e.g. IPE 100: It = 1.20 cm⁴ here, 1.16 cm⁴ in the ArcelorMittal tables). The values are converted into base SI units: cm²→m² ×10⁻⁴, cm⁴→m⁴ ×10⁻⁸, cm⁶→m⁶ ×10⁻¹², mm→m ×10⁻³.
  • Section multipliers: the stiffness multipliers (A₁, A₂, A₃, I₁, I₂, I₃, Iw) multiply the property before it enters the stiffness matrix; the mass multiplier μm multiplies the mass ρ·A·L and the member mass moments of inertia from density, and the self-weight multiplier μ_G the weight q = ρ·A·g - both computed from the unmodified properties. The position of the centroid within the section is determined from the extreme point of the section along axis -2 and along axis -3; the centroid is the origin of local axes 2 and 3.
  • Material database (values, base SI units): ρ per EN 1991-1-1 (Tab. A.1, A.4): steels 7850 kg/m³ (E = 210 GPa, EN 1993-1-1), stainless steel 7900 (EN 1993-1-4), cast iron 7200, aluminium 2700 (E = 70 GPa, G = 27 GPa, EN 1999-1-1), concretes 2500 = reinforced concrete (Ecm per EN 1992-1-1, Tab. 3.1); timber: softwood C14-C30 per EN 338 (E0,mean, ρmean, G0,mean = E0,mean/16) and glued laminated timber GL 24h/28h/32h per EN 14080, Tab. 5 (E0,g,mean, ρg,mean, Gg,mean = 650 MPa); timber ρ 350-490 kg/m³. Timber is orthotropic, so G is not E/(2(1+ν)) but the value from the standard - that is why G for timber (and aluminium) is given, not derived; for such a material of your own tick “G is entered manually”.
  • Boundary conditions: rigid and elastic supports, including warping; end releases N, T2, T3, M1, M2, M3, B, and elastic (semi-rigid) connections.
  • Loads: static (nodal and uniform member loads, in local or global axes, with point of application e2, e3 relative to the centroid; self-weight q = ρ·A·g·μ_G, where μ_G is the self-weight multiplier of the section (default 1), with user-set gravity direction and g), dynamic (force time histories from txt files, per node and direction, with a multiplier) and accelerograms (uniform base excitation in X, Y or Z); load combinations.
  • Distributed member load: consistent vector of nodal forces q·L/2 and moments q·L²/12 (q - intensity, L - FE length), condensed according to the end releases; in the GCS q is given per unit length of the member (not per projection): qloc = T·qglob (T - direction-cosine matrix of local axes 1, 2, 3), so an inclined member of length L carries q·L in total. The eccentricity e₂, e₃ gives a distributed torsional moment m₁ = e₂·q₃ - e₃·q₂ about the member axis (q₂, q₃ - local components of q); the coupling with the shear centre is handled by the element itself.
  • Self-weight: acts on all members by default; with the “Assign value to load case” tool a click on a member excludes it from the scope or brings it back. The gravity direction sets the direction of this load case (and is checked in the Response Spectrum Analysis, which treats the Z axis as vertical); lumped masses are not converted into loads.
  • Accelerogram: the excitation is always uniform, peff = -M·ι·ag(t) (M - mass matrix, ι - influence vector: 1 for translations in the accelerogram direction, 0 otherwise); for a diagonal M this is Fi = -mii·ag(t) at the DOFs in that direction. The support-node selection in the load-case dialog is for display only and does not affect the analysis. In the absolute response (and the animation) the ground motion is added to all nodes in the accelerogram direction: the displacement ug and velocity u̇g obtained by integrating ag(t), and the acceleration ag(t).
  • Masses: lumped (mX, mY, mZ, JX, JY, JZ), from density, member mass moments of inertia from density (J1 = ρ·(I2+I3)·L/2, J2 = ρ·I2·L/2, J3 = ρ·I3·L/2 at each node, and for an unsymmetrical section also J23 = -ρ·I23·L/2 (I23 - product of inertia of the section); the inertia tensor is transformed to the global axes as a whole, JGCS = TT·Jloc·T (T - direction-cosine matrix of the local axes 1, 2, 3), i.e. including the products of inertia JXY, JXZ, JYZ - so the periods depend neither on the orientation of the model nor on whether the section is described by I23 or by its principal axes; only with masses from density), warping inertia Jω; negative density and mass are rejected. The mass parts per node (nodal input | from density | total, for mX … JZ; an excluded part is struck out, “not included in the model”) are shown in “Model check”, in the “Dynamic model” panel after “Prepare model”, in the “Lumped mass” and “Assign to node” dialogs and in 3D (hover over a node); in the tabs Dynamic Response Analysis, Response Spectrum Analysis and Passive Control - TMD a table Mu | Mρ | total = M is shown below the matrix M.

FE mesh: a member and its division

  • A member is a drawn (geometric) line; the FE mesh is always formed from the members, on every “Mesh all line elements” and “Prepare model”, on ALL members regardless of the selection in the 2D view.
  • A member without a stored division is split into n equal parts from the “Divide each member into” field.
  • A node lying on a member axis (within the “Tol.” distance) that is not its end is a division and connection point: the member is divided at it and connected to it (this is how a mid-span node, a mass or a load point is defined). This is reported after “Prepare model” and in “Model check”; if the node should not be connected, move it off the axis.
  • Members whose axes cross without a node (e.g. crossing diagonals) are not joined by the program and no node is added at the intersection - this is only reported. If they should be connected, place a node at the intersection and draw the members node to node (“Line element” tool or “Add line FE”); diagonals that do not touch are left as they are.
  • The “Mesh selected member or element” tool (click, window or crossing) and the number of segments in “Add line FE” write the division into the member: it is stored, saved with the project and kept by “Mesh all line elements” and “Prepare model”; changing the “Divide each member into” field does not change it.
  • The uniform division is restored with the “↺ Uniform division of selected members” button, or with “Mesh all line elements” while members or their elements are selected (in selection mode).
  • Input at a mesh node (support, mass, elastic support, load) and property changes along a member (material, section, LCS rotation, release at an interior point) are kept by a new mesh: their points stay division points, and an element takes the properties of the old element that contains it. If some input cannot be kept, the program shows a persistent warning.
  • “Merge FE” and deleting a mesh element or mesh node freeze the remaining elements of the member: they keep their division and are no longer split automatically; only the tool can split them.
  • A node has the same label in the 2D and 3D views, lists and results: C for a user node, M for a node created by the mesh (the number is the node ID).

Analyses and methods

3D beam element (Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko) and the direct stiffness method

What and when: a two-node element with 6 DOFs per node (U, V, W, ΘX, ΘY, ΘZ). The Euler-Bernoulli element neglects shear deformation (slender members); the Timoshenko element includes it (short and deep members).

Global axes X, Y, Z and local member axes 1, 2, 3 (axis 1 from node i to node j, axes 2 and 3 in the plane of the section; right-handed systems). Displacements and rotations are U, V, W, ΘX, ΘY, ΘZ in the GCS and u, v, w, θ1, θ2, θ3 in the LCS.
K = Σe ΛeT·ke·Λe , K·u = F ; Φs = 12·E·I/(G·As·L2)

ke - element stiffness matrix in the LCS (12×12), Λe - transformation matrix (direction cosines of axes 1, 2, 3, including the LCS rotation), K - system stiffness matrix, u - displacement vector, F - load vector; Φs - shear parameter of the Timoshenko element (E - modulus of elasticity, G - shear modulus, I - second moment of area about the bending axis, As - shear area A2 or A3 for the corresponding direction, L - element length); Φs = 0 for the Euler-Bernoulli element.

Assumptions: linear elastic material, prismatic element, small displacements and strains; the cross-section remains plane.

In the program: element matrices are assembled by the direct stiffness method using code numbers (active and passive DOFs); I23 ≠ 0 of unsymmetric sections enters the stiffness matrix; end releases enter by static condensation of the element matrix.

Sources: [1], [2], [3] §8.2, [5].

Non-uniform torsion (warping, Vlasov)

What and when: torsion of thin-walled open sections (I, U, L…) whose warping is restrained (fixed end, rigid connection) - a bimoment B and warping torsion Mw appear.

E·Iw·θ1⁗ - G·It·θ1″ = mt ; B = -E·Iw·θ1″ ; Mt = Msv + Mw = G·It·θ1′ - E·Iw·θ1‴

θ1 - twist angle (rotation of the section about the member axis); θ1′, θ1″, θ1‴, θ1⁗ - first to fourth derivative of the twist angle with respect to the coordinate along the member axis (θ1′ is the measure of warping); E - modulus of elasticity, G - shear modulus, Iw - warping constant, It - torsion constant, mt - distributed torque (per unit length of the member), B - bimoment, Mt - total torque, Msv = G·It·θ1′ - St. Venant (uniform) torque, Mw = -E·Iw·θ1‴ - warping torque.

Assumptions: the cross-section contour does not deform; small rotations.

In the program: the “🌀 Warping (Vlasov)” switch adds a 7th DOF θ1′ at every node; the twist angle along the FE is interpolated by cubic Hermite polynomials N(x), the same as the beam deflection, so the torsional stiffness matrix of the FE (4×4, over θ1i, θ1i′, θ1j, θ1j′) is k = E·Iw·kb + G·It·kg, where kb = ∫0L N″T·N″ dx (the same matrix as for Euler-Bernoulli beam bending) and kg = ∫0L N′T·N′ dx (x - coordinate along the FE axis, L - FE length, i, j - FE nodes); accuracy improves with member division. It applies to all analyses; warping inertia Jω is a separate option.

Warping inertia: with the “inertia Jω” option the DOF θ1′ remains a dynamic DOF with Jω = ρ·Iw·L/2 at each FE node (only with masses from density and member mass moments of inertia; ρ - density, Iw - warping constant, L - FE length) and, for an input nodal mass moment of inertia, Jω = Jaxis·Iw/(I2+I3), where Jaxis = Σk e1,k2·Jk (e1 - unit vector of the member axis, Jk - input JX, JY, JZ; I2, I3 - second moments of area). For a member along X both formulas give the same value. Without the option θ1′ is statically condensed (no inertia); the effect of warping inertia is usually small.

Sources: [6], [7], [8].

Mass matrix and static condensation (Guyan)

What and when: a lumped (diagonal) mass matrix M from nodal input and from density; massless DOFs are condensed out, so the dynamic model contains only the DOFs that carry mass.

m = ρ·A·L/2 (at each element node) ; Kc = Kbb - Kbn·Knn-1·Knb

ρ - density, A - cross-section area, L - element length; Kc - condensed stiffness matrix of the dynamic model, subscript b - essential DOFs (with mass or mass moment of inertia), n - non-essential DOFs (without mass). Member mass moments of inertia: J1 = ρ·(I2+I3)·L/2, J2 = ρ·I2·L/2, J3 = ρ·I3·L/2.

Assumptions: the mass is lumped at the nodes - accuracy improves with member division; condensation is exact in statics, and in dynamics it neglects the inertia of the massless DOFs.

Modal analysis

What and when: natural frequencies and mode shapes of undamped free vibration - the basis of modal superposition, response spectrum analysis and Rayleigh damping.

(K - ωn2·M)·φn = 0 ; ΦT·M·Φ = I , ΦT·K·Φ = diag(ωn2) ; Tn = 2π/ωn , fn = 1/Tn

ωn - circular frequency of mode n, φn - mode shape, Φ - modal matrix (by columns), I - identity matrix, Tn - period, fn - frequency.

In the program: without a set number of modes the complete eigenproblem is solved with full matrices: the Cholesky factorisation M = L·LT (L - lower triangular matrix) reduces it to standard form, which is solved by the Jacobi method (rotations), giving all modes. With a set number of modes subspace iteration is used; a Sturm sequence check (the number of eigenvalues below a given bound) confirms that no mode was skipped, and the vectors are refined by Rayleigh quotient iteration. If the check shows that a mode was skipped or the iteration does not converge, the computation is repeated with the complete full-matrix method. The modes are mass-normalised (ΦT·M·Φ = I).

When a number of modes is set, the modes not computed have ω = 0 and a zero shape: they do not contribute to modal superposition (truncated basis), and the period table shows T = ∞.

Rayleigh damping

C = a0·M + a1·K, where a0 and a1 follow from the damping ratios ζi, ζj assigned to two chosen modes (equations and diagram in the Dynamic Response Analysis sub-tab).

Results and display

  • “Model check”, without analysis, checks element properties, supports, connectivity, sections, density and mass sources, elastic supports and connections and member crossings, and lists errors, warnings, a model summary and the mass parts per node.
  • “▶ Prepare model”: element and system matrices (active and passive DOFs, code numbers), load vectors, the condensed dynamic model, ω, T, f, mode shapes Φ (ΦT·M·Φ = I) and the matrix C.
  • 2D and 3D display of the model (node labels C and M, LCS, supports, loads, masses); XML and JPG export.
  • Limitations: line elements and linear elastic material only; diagonal (lumped) mass matrix; matrices are stored as full (dense) - the program is intended for small, teaching-size models.

Support symbols: boundary condition - a line in the -axis direction (restrained translation) and a circle (restrained rotation); elastic support - a zigzag spring in the -axis direction with a ground line (kX, kY, kZ), a spiral in the plane normal to the axis (kΘX, kΘY, kΘZ; around the node for the axis normal to the drawing, otherwise at the end of a stem on the free side) and a coiled spring along the member axis (kw, purple). Colours by axis: X red, Y green, Z blue. A spring in a direction rigidly restrained by a boundary condition is not drawn (it has no effect).

Analize i metode

Teorija I reda
K·u = F

K - linearna matrica krutosti, u - vektor generalisanih pomeranja, F - vektor opterećenja.

Izvori: [1], [6].

Linearizovana teorija II reda (P-Δ i P-δ)
(K + KG(NI))·u = F

Izvori: [1] §8.1, [5].

Bifurkaciona stabilnost i bočno-torziono izvijanje
(K + λ·KG(N))·φ = 0 ; (K + λ·KG(N, M2, M3))·φ = 0

λ - kritični faktor opterećenja (u EN 1993-1-1 αcr; kritično opterećenje = λcr·zadato opterećenje), φ - oblik izvijanja (proizvoljno normiran), N, M2, M3 - presečne sile po teoriji I reda.

Program sam bira rešavač, a korisnika pita kad procenjeno vreme premašuje 8 s.

GNA, korak 1 - teorija
fint(u) = F0 + λ·q ; II red: fint(u) = (KE + KG(N(u)))·u , KT = KE + KG(N) + KN

fint - unutrašnje sile, F0 - opterećenje prethodnih faza, q - referentno opterećenje faze, λ - faktor opterećenja, KE - elastična matrica krutosti, KT = ∂fint/∂u - tangentna matrica krutosti, KN - član od promene normalne sile sa pomeranjima. Pretpostavke pojedinih teorija date su ispod.

Nazivi analiza: opcija ima međunarodni naziv (first-order / second-order analysis - EN 1993-1-1 §5.2; co-rotational analysis - Crisfield, Vol. 1, §7), a u zagradi ustaljeni domaći naziv (teorija I, II, III reda). „Teorija III reda” u ovom programu znači analizu sa velikim pomeranjima i rotacijama i malim deformacijama (korotaciona formulacija), a ne teoriju velikih (konačnih) deformacija.

Pojedinačne teorije (materijal svuda linearno elastičan): Linearised second-order analysis (linearizovana teorija II reda) - male deformacije i rotacije (sin φ ≈ φ, cos φ ≈ 1), umerena pomeranja; ravnoteža na deformisanoj konfiguraciji, ali sa normalnim silama teorije I reda (SII·DII ≈ SI·DII; S - normalna sila, D - pomeranje, eksponent - red teorije po kojoj se veličina računa); promena N usled deformacije i skraćenje tetive se zanemaruju; [KE + KG(NI)]·u = F je jedno linearno rešenje, a pošto NI zavisi od opterećenja, superpozicija ne važi; det(KE + λ·KG) = 0 daje kritični faktor (bifurkacija). Second-order analysis - P-Δ only (teorija II reda - samo P-Δ): geometrijska matrica sadrži samo član N/L (N - normalna sila, L - dužina KE) uz relativno poprečno pomeranje krajeva KE; izostavljaju se lokalni efekat P-δ (doprinos normalne sile preko zakrivljenosti unutar KE) i skraćenje tetive, a elastično savijanje KE ostaje uključeno; pri podeli štapa na više KE deo efekta P-δ obuhvataju pomeranja međučvorova, pa razlika prema punoj teoriji II reda zavisi od mreže. Second-order analysis - P-Δ and P-δ (teorija II reda - P-Δ i P-δ): konzistentna geometrijska matrica kG; zanemaruju se skraćenje tetive usled savijanja (član ½·ψ2 u izduženju, ψ - rotacija tetive) i viši članovi rotacija.

Izvori: [3] §1.2, [4] §2.4, [1] (12.3)-(12.6).

GNA, korak 3 - kontrola puta
Ravnotežni put λ-u: A - granična tačka (posle nje proboj ravnoteže, „snap-through”), B - povratna tačka (u se smanjuje, povratni skok, „snap-back”).
pomeranje: Δuk = zadato ; Crisfield: ΔuT·Δu + ψ2·Δλ2·‖uI‖2 = Δl2 ; Riks: Δu1T·δu = 0 ; Ramm: ΔuT·δu = 0

Izvori: [3] pogl. 9, [4] pogl. 4, [10], [11], [12], [13].

GNA, korak 4 - iterativni postupak
KT(i-1)·δu(i) = r(i-1) , u(i) = u(i-1) + δu(i) ; kriterijum sila: ‖r‖ ≤ tol·‖F‖

Izvori: [2] §8.4.1-8.4.4, [3] §1.2, §9.3-9.4, [14].

Faze i imperfekcije

Fimp = -KG(N)·u0

Rezultati i prikaz

  • Pomeranja, reakcije, presečne sile N, T2, T3, M1, M2, M3, B (LKS i GKS), matrice k, Λ, K, kG i vektori Q, 2D/3D dijagrami i oblici izvijanja; za GNA istorija inkremenata, animacija deformisanog oblika kroz inkremente, poređenje šema i korisnički grafik po inkrementima (npr. kriva λ-u); XML, JPG.

General notes

The tab gives the static response (displacements, reactions, internal forces) and the stability of the Model tab model under static load cases and their combinations - by first-order theory, linearised second-order theory, bifurcation stability theory (including lateral-torsional buckling) and by phased geometrically nonlinear analysis (GNA). The material is linear elastic in every theory.

  • Units: the results (displacements, reactions, internal forces) are in the unit system of the model; tables, diagrams and titles carry no unit labels. The diagram scale is written as “1 = X” (one length unit of the drawing corresponds to the value X); the length L and the imperfection amplitude e0 are entered in the length unit of the model.

  1. Click “📐 Load data from the Model tab” (the model must be prepared in the Model tab).
  2. For every load case and combination tick the analyses: first-order theory, linearised second-order theory, bifurcation stability and lateral-torsional buckling (with the number of requested critical factors λ).
  3. For GNA click “➕ Create load scheme”: set the phases (loads acting simultaneously or one after another), an imperfection in a buckling shape if needed, and choose the procedure in four steps:

Analyses and methods

First-order theory
K·u = F

K - linear stiffness matrix, u - vector of generalised displacements, F - load vector. Assumptions: small strains and small displacements - equilibrium is written on the undeformed structure, so superposition holds.

Sources: [1], [6].

Linearised second-order theory (P-Δ and P-δ)
(K + KG(NI))·u = F

KG - geometric (initial-stress) stiffness matrix, NI - first-order axial forces of the same case. What and when: the effect of the axial force on bending (P-Δ - chord rotation, P-δ - member curvature) in slender compressed members. Assumptions: equilibrium on the deformed structure, linearised (N does not change with the displacements); the result is valid only when λcr > 1 (K + KG positive definite) - otherwise the program warns.

Sources: [1] §8.1, [5].

Bifurcation stability and lateral-torsional buckling
(K + λ·KG(N))·φ = 0 ; (K + λ·KG(N, M2, M3))·φ = 0

λ - critical load factor (αcr in EN 1993-1-1; critical load = λcr·applied load), φ - buckling mode (arbitrarily normalised), N, M2, M3 - first-order internal forces. For lateral-torsional buckling KG also contains terms from the bending moments (coupling of bending and twisting), and the critical moment is Mcr = λcr·M; it is computed with or without warping (switch in the Model tab), with the load point given by its eccentricity e2, e3 from the centroid. Assumptions: linear stability theory of a perfect system (no imperfections), N and M proportional to the load.

In the program: the eigenproblem is solved by the dense solver or by subspace iteration with a Sturm sequence check; if the check fails, the dense solver. The program chooses by itself and asks the user when the estimated time exceeds 8 s.

GNA, step 1 - theory
fint(u) = F0 + λ·q ; second order: fint(u) = (KE + KG(N(u)))·u , KT = KE + KG(N) + KN

fint - internal forces, F0 - load of the earlier phases, q - reference load of the phase, λ - load factor, KE - elastic stiffness matrix, KT = ∂fint/∂u - tangent stiffness matrix, KN - term from the change of the axial force with the displacements. Second-order analysis (P-Δ only, or P-Δ and P-δ): moderate displacements and small rotations; N depends on the displacements, so the problem is nonlinear; it does not describe the behaviour beyond a limit point, and outside its range of validity (rotation above 0.1 rad) the program warns. Co-rotational analysis (third-order theory in the local terminology; co-rotational formulation, planar or spatial, also with warping): the rigid-body motion of each element is separated by a co-rotating frame in which the strains are small, so the displacements and rotations of the structure may be large - provided that the strains and relative rotations within each element are small (a sufficiently fine mesh).

Analysis names: each option carries the international name (first-order / second-order analysis - EN 1993-1-1 §5.2; co-rotational analysis - Crisfield, Vol. 1, §7); the Serbian interface adds the established local name in parentheses (first-, second-, third-order theory). “Third-order theory” in this program means an analysis with large displacements and rotations and small strains (co-rotational formulation), not a large (finite) strain theory.

Individual theories (material linear elastic throughout): Linearised second-order analysis - small strains and rotations (sin φ ≈ φ, cos φ ≈ 1), moderate displacements; equilibrium on the deformed configuration, but with first-order axial forces (SII·DII ≈ SI·DII; S - axial force, D - displacement, superscript - order of the theory by which the quantity is computed); the change of N due to deformation and the chord shortening are neglected; [KE + KG(NI)]·u = F is one linear solution, and since NI depends on the load, superposition does not hold; det(KE + λ·KG) = 0 gives the critical factor (bifurcation). Second-order analysis - P-Δ only: the geometric matrix contains only the term N/L (N - axial force, L - element length) with the relative transverse displacement of the element ends; the local P-δ effect (axial-force contribution through the curvature within the element) and the chord shortening are omitted, while elastic bending of the element remains included; when a member is divided into several elements, part of the P-δ effect is captured by the intermediate node displacements, so the difference from full second-order theory depends on the mesh. Second-order analysis - P-Δ and P-δ: consistent geometric matrix kG; the chord shortening due to bending (term ½·ψ2 in the elongation, ψ - chord rotation) and higher-order rotation terms are neglected. Co-rotational analysis (third-order theory): fint(u) = F0 + λ·q on the current deformed configuration; the co-rotational formulation separates the rigid-body motion of each element from small local strains, for which linear beam theory holds ([3] §7.3) - it is not a large (finite) strain theory, and accuracy remains subject to the element assumptions and the mesh. A perfect system (straight column, member without initial imperfection) does not move to the buckled shape by itself at a bifurcation point: it stays on the primary branch, which is unstable beyond it - the program reports that the bifurcation point was passed; to trace the buckled shape an initial imperfection must be introduced.

GNA, step 2 - solution approach
purely incremental: KT(un)·Δun = Δλn·q ; with correction: KT(un)·Δun = Δλn·q + rn , rn = F0 + λn·q - fint(un)

n - increment number, Δun, Δλn - increments, r - unbalanced (residual) forces. The single-step approach exists only with first-order and linearised second-order theory. Without iterations the solution drifts from the equilibrium path (the error is approximately proportional to 1/N, N - number of steps); the program prints ‖r‖/‖F‖ at the end. The incremental-iterative approach iterates within each increment (predictor + corrector) until equilibrium is satisfied.

With the purely incremental approach in third-order theory the error for slender members is large even with thousands of steps: the tangent step stretches the element chord, giving a spurious axial force ½·ψ2·E·A (ψ - chord rotation in the step, E·A - axial stiffness). The approach with correction of the unbalanced forces corresponds to one Newton-Raphson iteration per step: the the departure from the equilibrium path is much smaller, but equilibrium is still not satisfied. With the incremental-iterative approach every accepted point satisfies equilibrium within the given tolerance; this alone does not prove that the intended branch is followed or that the equilibrium is stable.

GNA, step 3 - path control
Equilibrium path λ-u: A - limit point (followed by snap-through), B - turning point (u decreases, snap-back). ① load control does not pass A: a step across A would “jump” to a distant branch, so the program detects this, stops the analysis at A and reports a limit point; ② displacement control passes A and stops in the same way at B, reporting a turning point; ③ the arc-length method can follow the whole path, with a suitable step and convergence. The status “converged” means that the whole path up to λ = 1 was followed without a change of branch; stopping at A or B does not describe the dynamic response during snap-through.
displacement: Δuk = prescribed ; Crisfield: ΔuT·Δu + ψ2·Δλ2·‖uI‖2 = Δl2 ; Riks: Δu1T·δu = 0 ; Ramm: ΔuT·δu = 0

uk - controlled translation U, V or W (the one with the largest first-order displacement), Δl - arc length, ψ - load weighting (0 cylindrical, 1 spherical constraint), uI - displacement due to the load q at the start of the phase (load scaling): KE-1·q in second-order theory, KT(u0)-1·q in third-order theory (u0 - state at the start of the phase; in the first phase KT(0) = KE), Δu1 - first predictor of the increment (Riks: fixed normal plane), Δu - current increment (Ramm: updated normal plane), δu - iterative correction. The arc norm is computed over translations. The arc-length method is not offered with the approaches without iterations.

Displacement control ([10]; [3] §9.3.2.3): Δλ = Δuc/δut,c, in the iterations δλ = -δūc/δut,c (uc - controlled translation, δut = KT-1·q - tangent displacement due to the reference load, δū = KT-1·r - correction due to the unbalanced forces, subscript c - component uc); the controlled degree of freedom is given in the scheme message, and with an approach without iterations only the incremental predictor is performed. It passes a load limit point if the chosen displacement is a suitable path parameter. Riks-Wempner ([3] §9.3.2.2, Fig. 9.11a): δλ = -Δu1T·δū/(Δu1T·δut) - no root selection, but with a large step it can miss the path. Ramm ([3] §9.3.2.2, Fig. 9.11b): δλ = -ΔuT·δū/(ΔuT·δut). Crisfield ([3] §9.3.2.1 and 9.4): δλ from a quadratic equation, the root with the smallest angle to the previous increment is chosen; for the spherical constraint (ψ = 1) the step is halved when there is no real root. The arc-length method does not resolve branch selection at a bifurcation point. Under load control the tangent matrix KT is singular at a limit point, and beyond it there is no adjacent equilibrium for a larger λ.

GNA, step 4 - iterative procedure
KT(i-1)·δu(i) = r(i-1) , u(i) = u(i-1) + δu(i) ; force criterion: ‖r‖ ≤ tol·‖F‖

Newton-Raphson - KT is updated in every iteration (locally quadratic convergence - near the solution, with a consistent and nonsingular tangent; Bathe, 1996, §8.4.1); modified Newton-Raphson - KT from the start of the increment (linear); initial stiffness (also called the initial stress method) - a constant K0: KE in second-order theory, KT(u0) from the start of the phase in third-order theory (linear; does not converge near a limit point); quasi-Newton BFGS - secant update of the inverse matrix (locally superlinear). The convergence criterion in second-order theory is force, displacement, energy or combined, and in third-order theory force.

Newton-Raphson has the most expensive iteration (a new tangent and factorisation in every iteration); quadratic convergence holds locally - when the iterate is sufficiently close to the solution and the tangent is consistent, nonsingular and does not change abruptly. Modified Newton-Raphson has a cheap iteration (no new factorisation). Initial stiffness has, as a rule, the slowest convergence and may diverge; K0 in the first phase of third-order theory equals KE. The name “initial stress method” does not refer to the geometric matrix KG (the “initial-stress matrix”). Quasi-Newton BFGS ([14]) starts from the tangent at the beginning of the increment and updates its inverse from the change of internal forces (secant condition) ([2] §8.4.2).

Phases and imperfections

Loads act in phases, simultaneously or one after another, with the procedure chosen per phase. An imperfection has the shape of a chosen buckling mode of the phase and the amplitude e0 (largest translational displacement of the shape; for a predominantly torsional shape, its largest component); helper e0 = L/α to EN 1993-1-1, Table 5.1 (L - member length, α = 350, 300, 250, 200, 150 for buckling curves a0, a, b, c, d).

Fimp = -KG(N)·u0

An imperfection does not change the geometry; it enters as an equivalent load (N - axial forces at the end of the phase, including earlier phases, u0 - imperfection): exact in linearised second-order theory, approximate in third-order theory. An imperfection from an earlier phase remains in the later phases, and its equivalent load grows with the axial force of every following phase.

Results and display

  • Displacements, reactions, internal forces N, T2, T3, M1, M2, M3, B (LCS and GCS), matrices k, Λ, K, kG and vectors Q, 2D/3D diagrams and buckling modes; for GNA the increment history, animation of the deformed shape over increments, scheme comparison and a user-defined plot over increments (e.g. the λ-u curve); XML, JPG.
  • Graphical display: by default a common scale for all displays of the same quantity in the same analysis (all load cases and combinations, first-order and linearised second-order theory; in the geometrically nonlinear analysis all increments of all schemes, hence all animation frames) - second-order diagrams and displacements appear as much larger as they are. The scale (1 = …, i.e. one length unit of the drawing corresponds to that value) or the displacement magnification and the max and min are written in the plot title, without unit labels; the diagram shows values at member ends, jumps and extremes (switch). The “per display” option normalises each display to its own maximum. A buckling shape is arbitrarily normalised (max |φ| and the magnification are written).
  • Internal force components: in the LCS N - axial force, T2, T3 - shear forces, M1 - torsional moment, M2, M3 - bending moments about local axes 2 and 3, M2′, M3′ - moments about the principal centroidal axes of the section, rotated by the angle α from the local axes (equal to M2, M3 when I23 = 0, I23 - product of inertia), B - bimoment (non-zero only with warping, restrained torsion, switched on); in the GCS FX, FY, FZ, MXX, MYY, MZZ - components in the global axes.
  • Sign conventions: in the LCS N+ is tension, T+ acts in the + direction of local axis 2 (T2) or 3 (T3), and the M diagram is drawn on the tension side of the section; M1+ rotates the section about the + local axis 1 (right-hand rule); B = -E·Iw·θ1″ (E - modulus of elasticity, Iw - warping constant, θ1 - twist angle) is drawn along the + local axis 2 and has no “tension side” convention. In the GCS forces are positive in the + directions of the X, Y, Z axes, moments by the right-hand rule (the same convention as for the generalised nodal displacements in the finite element method), and the M diagram is still drawn on the tension side. Support reactions and fixed-end moments are drawn in the direction given by the sign from the solution and printed with their sign in the text. The same conventions apply in the Passive control tab.
  • Magnification factor: for the deformed shape, reactions and buckling shape - the number by which displacements are multiplied in the drawing (1 = true shape); for internal force diagrams - multiplier of the automatic diagram scale. An empty field, 0 or a negative number restores the automatic value. The numerical zero is an absolute threshold in model units: a value x with |x| ≤ threshold is shown as 0 and no symbol is drawn for it. The increment animation at speed 1.0 shows 5 increments per second.
  • Limitations: the material is linear elastic in every theory; static load cases from the Model tab only.
  • Second-order theory does not describe the behaviour beyond a limit point: displacement control and the arc-length method trace the second-order path up to its own limit point, which is not the physical limit load (for shallow trusses and arches it overestimates it), and stop on the descending branch with an explanation; outside its range of validity (chord or nodal rotation above 0.1 rad, or estimated displacement error from the neglected chord shortening above 5 %) the program warns and recommends third-order theory.
  • Initial stiffness usually does not converge near a limit point (with the spherical arc-length constraint it normally passes it), and in third-order theory for slender members already at small rotations (of the order of 0.01-0.1 rad), because the kept tangent has the large axial stiffness E·A/L in the original member direction. In third-order theory it keeps KT(u0) and, when it stops, reports ρ - the spectral radius of I - KT(u0)-1·KT(u) (I - identity matrix, KT - tangent stiffness matrix, u0 - state at the start of the phase, u - current state); under load control convergence requires ρ < 1, under displacement and arc-length control the condition is stricter. In second-order theory it keeps the elastic stiffness matrix KE.

Direktna numerička integracija (DNI): Newmark i metoda centralnih razlika

Newmark: ui+1 = ui + Δt·u̇i + Δt2·[(1/2 - β)·üi + β·üi+1] , u̇i+1 = u̇i + Δt·[(1 - γ)·üi + γ·üi+1] , γ = 1/2, β = 1/4
MCR: (M/Δt2 + C/(2Δt))·ui+1 = Fi - (K - 2M/Δt2)·ui - (M/Δt2 - C/(2Δt))·ui-1

i - redni broj koraka, γ, β - parametri postupka.

Izvori: [1] §5.3, §5.4, [3] §9.2.1, §9.2.3, [4].

Korak numeričke integracije i korak zapisa dejstva

Δt ≤ Δtzapis: m = ⌈Δtzapis/Δt⌉, h = Δtzapis/m ≤ Δt ; Δt > Δtzapis: h = Δt
F(tj) = Fi + (Fi+1 - Fi)·(tj - ti)/Δtzapis , ti = i·Δtzapis ≤ tj < ti+1

m - ceo broj (Δtzapis = m·h; ⌈x⌉ - najmanji ceo broj ≥ x), Fi - i-ta vrednost zapisa, ti - njen trenutak.

Modalna superpozicija
u(t) = Σn φ̃n·qn(t) , q̈n + 2ζnωn·q̇n + ωn2·qn = φ̃nT·F

qn - modalna koordinata, φ̃n - oblik normiran masom, ωn, ζn - kružna frekvencija i relativno prigušenje tona n.

C = a0·M + a1·K , ζn = a0/(2ωn) + a1·ωn/2

Kretanje tla i korekcija bazne linije
u̇g(t) = u̇g0 + ∫ag dt , ug(t) = ug0 + ∫u̇g dt

ug, u̇g - pomeranje i brzina tla (trapezno pravilo), ug0, u̇g0 - početni uslovi kretanja tla.

General notes

The tab computes the time-history response of a linear system with n degrees of freedom under arbitrary excitation: forces, an accelerogram, or load cases and combinations from the Model tab. The system is entered manually (M, K, C) or the condensed model is imported from the Model tab.

  • Units: M, K, C, Δt, duration, initial conditions and excitation are entered in one consistent system (e.g. kg, N/m, N·s/m, s, N or t, kN/m, kN·s/m, s, kN); u, u̇, ü, F, t, ω and T in the results are in the same system. With the model from the Model tab, the units of the model apply.

How to work

  1. Enter the number of DOFs n and the matrices M, K and C (C manually or from ζ - helper below the table), or click “📐 Load data from the Model tab”.
  2. Choose the numerical integration (Newmark or the central difference method), the approach (DNI or modal superposition), the numerical integration step Δt, the load record step Δtrec (empty = Δt) and the total time, and enter the initial conditions. For the alignment of the step with the record see “Numerical integration step and load record step” below.
  3. Define the excitation: DOF forces from txt files, an accelerogram (“Forces from accelerogram: Yes”, “📂 Load accelerogram”, vector ι) or, with the model, “Load cases and combinations from the Model tab”. With an accelerogram choose the baseline correction and the initial conditions of the ground motion.
  4. Click “▶ Calculate”; results, plots and animations appear below.

Analyses and methods

Equation of motion and excitation
M·ü + C·u̇ + K·u = F(t) ; accelerogram: F(t) = -M·ι·ag(t) , üabs = ü + ι·ag

M, C, K - mass, damping and stiffness matrices; u, u̇, ü - displacement, velocity and acceleration vectors (relative to the ground with an accelerogram); F(t) - load vector; ι - influence vector (with the model from the Model tab ιj = 1 for the checked DOFs and 0 for the others; with manually entered matrices numerical values ιj, default 1); ag - ground acceleration. With Model load cases the static and dynamic parts are superposed. Assumptions: linear system (M, C, K independent of time and response), uniform support excitation, dynamic loads only on DOFs that carry mass.

Direct numerical integration (DNI): Newmark and the central difference method

What and when: the equations M·ü + C·u̇ + K·u = F are solved together at every step Δt; valid also for non-classical damping.

Newmark: ui+1 = ui + Δt·u̇i + Δt2·[(1/2 - β)·üi + β·üi+1] , u̇i+1 = u̇i + Δt·[(1 - γ)·üi + γ·üi+1] , γ = 1/2, β = 1/4
CDM: (M/Δt2 + C/(2Δt))·ui+1 = Fi - (K - 2M/Δt2)·ui - (M/Δt2 - C/(2Δt))·ui-1

i - step number, γ, β - method parameters. Newmark with constant average acceleration is unconditionally stable and has no numerical damping (the amplitude does not decay), but it elongates the period of vibration: T̄/T = (ω·Δt/2)/arctan(ω·Δt/2) ≈ 1 + (ω·Δt)2/12, where T̄ is the numerically obtained period, T the exact natural period, ω = 2π/T the circular frequency of the mode and Δt the integration time step (for Δt = T/10 the elongation is about 3.2 %, for Δt = T/20 about 0.8 %; [1] §5.5, Fig. 5.5.2, [3] §9.4.3, Fig. 9.6). The central difference method (CDM) shortens the period, T̄/T ≈ 1 - (ω·Δt)2/24, and is conditionally stable: Δt < Tn,min/π (Tn,min - shortest natural period); the program checks this and, if the condition is not met, the analysis is not run. The step Δt is entered by the user and is not changed by the program; for accuracy Δt ≤ T/10 is usually taken for the highest mode that matters for the response.

Sources: [1] §5.3, §5.4, [3] §9.2.1, §9.2.3, [4].

Numerical integration step and load record step

The numerical integration step Δt is chosen by the user. The load record (force F(t) or ground acceleration ag(t)) has its own step Δtrec: from the field “Load record step” for one-column files (empty field: Δtrec = Δt), and for a two-column file (t, value) from the time column, which must increase with a constant step (otherwise the file is not loaded). The integration always uses a constant step h, and the record is converted to the analysis instants tj = j·h by linear interpolation:

Δt ≤ Δtrec: m = ⌈Δtrec/Δt⌉, h = Δtrec/m ≤ Δt ; Δt > Δtrec: h = Δt
F(tj) = Fi + (Fi+1 - Fi)·(tj - ti)/Δtrec , ti = i·Δtrec ≤ tj < ti+1

m - integer (Δtrec = m·h; ⌈x⌉ - the smallest integer ≥ x), Fi - the i-th record value, ti - its instant. For Δt ≤ Δtrec every record value is an analysis instant, so characteristic (e.g. peak) load values are not skipped, and between them the load varies linearly - the same assumption the integration methods use (excitation linear within a step, [1] §5.2). When h differs from the entered Δt, a note with the adopted step is shown with the results. For Δt > Δtrec the record values between the analysis instants are skipped; a warning with the largest record value and the largest value at the analysis instants is shown with the results. If the records have different steps, h is aligned with the smallest; points of a record whose step is not an integer multiple of that step are interpolated (note with the results). After the end of the record the load is 0. When Δtrec = Δt, the record is copied literally, so the results are the same as without alignment.

Recommendation: Δt ≤ T/10 (T - the shortest period of the modes contributing significantly to the response; Newmark elongates the period by ≈ (ω·Δt)2/12, ω = 2π/T, about 3 % for Δt = T/10) and Δt ≤ Δtrec; for the central difference method also Δt < Tmin/π (Tmin - the shortest natural period of the system).

Modal superposition
u(t) = Σn φ̃n·qn(t) , q̈n + 2ζnωn·q̇n + ωn2·qn = φ̃nT·F

qn - modal coordinate, φ̃n - mass-normalised mode shape, ωn, ζn - circular frequency and damping ratio of mode n. In the program: for n ≥ 2, in manual mode and with Model load cases; all modes are used, and each modal equation is integrated by the chosen method (Newmark or CDM). Only the diagonal terms of Φ̃T·C·Φ̃ are kept, so the method is exact only for a classical C (a warning is shown when damping is non-classical).

Sources: [1] ch. 12, [3] §9.3.

Rayleigh damping
Damping ratio of the Rayleigh matrix C versus ω: the mass term a0/(2ω) damps the low modes and the stiffness term a1·ω/2 the high modes; the prescribed ζ is exact only at ωi and ωj, smaller between them and larger outside.
C = a0·M + a1·K , ζn = a0/(2ωn) + a1·ωn/2

a0, a1 - coefficients obtained by solving this equation for two chosen modes i and j with the prescribed ζi, ζj (one ζ for n = 1). Alternatively, the matrix C can be entered manually.

Sources: [1] §11.4, [3] §9.3.3.

Ground motion and baseline correction
u̇g(t) = u̇g0 + ∫ag dt , ug(t) = ug0 + ∫u̇g dt

ug, u̇g - ground displacement and velocity (trapezoidal rule), ug0, u̇g0 - initial conditions of the ground motion. The velocity drift correction subtracts a linear term c1·t from u̇g (the same as removing the mean of ag), and the velocity and displacement drift correction also a parabolic term c2·(t2/2 - Tr·t/2) (Tr - record duration). The correction affects only absolute displacements and velocities; the relative response is unchanged.

Sd i Se su u jedinici ubrzanja, sile i pomeranja u jedinicama sile i dužine, a T i ω u jedinici vremena istog sistema.

Kako se radi

  1. Zadajte M i K ručno, preuzmite ih iz taba Dinamička analiza odgovora ili kliknite „📐 Učitaj podatke iz taba Model”; uz ručni unos zadajte vektor ι.
  2. Izaberite tip spektra (Tip 1, Tip 2 ili Tip 3), tip tla A-E, agR/g, klasu značaja (γI), faktor ponašanja q i relativno prigušenje ζ; po potrebi uključite vertikalni spektar.
  3. Izaberite pravilo kombinovanja tonova (SRSS ili CQC) i kliknite „▶ Izračunaj”.

Analize i metode

General notes

The tab computes the seismic response of a linear system by modal response spectrum analysis to EN 1998-1 (§4.3.3.3): the peak response of each mode follows from the design spectrum, and the total response from the combination of modes (SRSS or CQC) and directions (SRSS).

  • Units: M, K and g are entered in one consistent system (the default g = 9.81 is in SI); agR/g, γI, q and ζ are dimensionless. Sd and Se are in the acceleration unit, forces and displacements in the force and length units, and T and ω in the time unit of the same system.

How to work

  1. Enter M and K manually, take them from the Dynamic Response Analysis tab or click “📐 Load data from the Model tab”; with manual input enter the vector ι.
  2. Choose the spectrum type (Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3), ground type A-E, agR/g, importance class (γI), behaviour factor q and damping ratio ζ; switch on the vertical spectrum if needed.
  3. Choose the modal combination rule (SRSS or CQC) and click “▶ Calculate”.

Analyses and methods

Modal quantities and modal response
Lk = φ̃kT·M·ι , Γk = Lk/M*k , Meff,k = Lk2/M*k ; Sk = Γk·M·φ̃k·Sd(Tk) , de,k = Γk·φ̃k·Sd(Tk)/ωk2

M*k = φ̃kT·M·φ̃k - generalised mass, Lk - excitation factor, Γk - participation factor, Meff,k - effective modal mass (and its ratio to the total mass), Sk - seismic forces of mode k, de,k - displacements of mode k, ι - influence vector of the excitation direction (set automatically per X, Y, Z direction with the Model).

Response: modal seismic forces and displacements; displacements ds = qd·de (de - displacement from a linear analysis with the design spectrum Sd, which is already reduced by the behaviour factor q, before multiplication by qd; qd = q, and for T* < TC qd = μδ = 1 + (q - 1)·TC/T* is also shown, T* - period of the dominant mode, i.e. the mode with the largest effective modal mass in the excitation direction (shown in the results as T* = Tk with the number k of that mode, not necessarily T1); §4.3.4, Annex B, (B.10); after the modal combination ds,i = min(qd·de,i, 3·del,i), since by Annex B the target displacement need not exceed 3 times the elastic one - the bound is permitted, a result without it would be conservative) and, for comparison, del - displacement from the elastic spectrum Se; with the Model, internal forces and reactions.

SRSS: Ei = √(Σk Ek,i2) ; CQC: Ei = √(ΣjΣk ρjk·Ej,i·Ek,i)
  • Modal combination: SRSS (square root of the sum of squares) or CQC (complete quadratic combination, correlation coefficients ρjk after Der Kiureghian); over the X, Y, Z directions always SRSS (§4.3.3.5); a warning if the relevant modes in the excitation direction (Meff,k/Mtot ≥ 0.05, or up to a sum of 0.90, §4.3.3.3.1(3)) are not independent (Tj > 0.9·Ti, §4.3.3.3.2) and SRSS is selected.
  • CQC correlation coefficient: ρjk = 8ζ²·(1 + βjk)·βjk3/2 / [(1 - βjk²)² + 4ζ²·βjk·(1 + βjk)²], where βjk = ωk/ωj is the ratio of the circular frequencies of modes k and j, and ζ the fraction of critical damping (the same for all modes); ρjj = 1, ρjk = 1 also for βjk = 1 (modes of equal frequency), the matrix is symmetric (ρ(β) = ρ(1/β)), and for ω ≈ 0 ρjk = 0 off the diagonal. Combination: Ei = √(ΣjΣk ρjk·Ej,i·Ek,i), Ek,i - contribution of mode k to quantity i.

Assumptions: SRSS holds for well-separated modes; CQC accounts for the correlation of closely spaced modes. One ζ for all modes.

Results and display

Per-mode tables (ω, T, M*k, Lk, Γk, Meff,k, Sd(Tk), Se(Tk), forces and displacements) and combined values; with the Model, 2D/3D display and animation of mode shapes, displacements, seismic forces, internal forces (LCS/GCS) and reactions (per mode and combined), with envelopes; XML, plots to JPG and TXT (elastic and design spectra Se and Sd, columns T, Se, Sd; the vertical spectrum in a separate file).

  • Limitations: linear elastic model, with nonlinearity only through the behaviour factor q; one ζ for all modes; uniform support excitation.
  • X/Y/Z directions, the vertical spectrum and the graphical display only when linked to the Model. The Z axis of the GCS is vertical: the horizontal spectrum acts in the X and Y directions and the vertical one in the Z direction, so gravity in the Model should be along the Z axis (the program warns for gravity along X or Y).

  2. Zadajte opseg perioda T0-Tmax, korak perioda ΔT i relativno prigušenje ζ, izaberite postupak (podrazumevano Nigam-Jennings) i zadajte korak numeričke integracije Δt (uslov Δt ≤ T/n ili zadat korak).

u, u̇, ü - relativno pomeranje, brzina i ubrzanje; ω = 2π/T - kružna frekvencija, T - period; ζ - relativno prigušenje; Sd, Sv, Sa - spektri relativnog pomeranja, brzine i ubrzanja, Saa - spektar apsolutnog ubrzanja, Spv, Spa - pseudo-spektri brzine i ubrzanja. Kontrola: Saa = max|ω2·u + 2ζω·u̇| (uslov ravnoteže).

Postupak Nigam-Jennings (tačno rešenje uz linearnu interpolaciju pobude), Newmark i metoda centralnih razlika

Postupak Nigam-Jennings (podrazumevano; [1] §5.2, tab.

General notes

The tab computes response spectra of a linear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system for a given accelerogram: for every period T of the chosen range the equation of motion is solved and the largest absolute value of the response is recorded.

  • Units: the accelerogram, Δtrec and the periods may be in any consistent system; Sd is in the length unit, Sv and Spv in the velocity unit, and Sa, Saa and Spa in the acceleration unit of the record. Multiply a record in units of g beforehand by g in the chosen system (e.g. 9.81 for SI).
  • Accelerogram file: one column ag with a constant step Δtrec, or two columns t, ag (Δtrec is read from the t column, which must increase with a constant step); decimal point or comma; rows with text (header, footer) are skipped. Δtrec must equal the sampling interval of the record, because it defines the time axis. The integration time step Δt is set by the user (see “Integration time step” below).

How to work

  1. Load the accelerogram from a txt file (an ag column, or t, ag columns, in which case Δtrec is taken from the t column) and check the record step Δtrec.
  2. Set the period range T0-Tmax, the step ΔT and the damping ratio ζ, and choose the method (Nigam-Jennings by default).
  3. Click “▶ Calculate spectra”; tick the spectra you want on the combined plot and set scale factors if needed.

Analyses and methods

Equation of motion and spectra
Single-degree-of-freedom system (mass m, stiffness k, damping c) on ground moving with acceleration ag(t); u is the displacement of the mass relative to the ground.
ü + 2ζω·u̇ + ω2·u = -ag(t) ; Sd = max|u| , Sv = max|u̇| , Sa = max|ü| , Saa = max|ü + ag| , Spv = ω·Sd , Spa = ω2·Sd

u, u̇, ü - relative displacement, velocity and acceleration; ω = 2π/T - circular frequency, T - period; ζ - damping ratio; Sd, Sv, Sa - spectra of relative displacement, velocity and acceleration, Saa - absolute acceleration spectrum, Spv, Spa - pseudo-velocity and pseudo-acceleration spectra. Check: Saa = max|ω2·u + 2ζω·u̇| (equilibrium).

Nigam-Jennings method (exact solution for linearly interpolated excitation), Newmark and the central difference method

Nigam-Jennings method (a method based on interpolation of the excitation; [1] §5.2, Table 5.2.1, [2]; default): the ground acceleration ag is assumed to vary linearly within each integration time step Δt, and the equation of motion is solved exactly for this excitation. The state at the end of the step follows from the recurrence formulas ui+1 = A·ui + B·u̇i + C·pi + D·pi+1, u̇i+1 = A′·ui + B′·u̇i + C′·pi + D′·pi+1 (i - number of the computed time instant; p = -ag - excitation per unit mass; A, B, C, D, A′, B′, C′, D′ - coefficients depending on ω, ζ and Δt, [1] Table 5.2.1; valid also for ζ = 0). The solution is exact at the computed time instants regardless of the step size, so the default step Δt = Δtrec/m ≤ T/100 (m - integer) is adopted only to capture the peak response well. If the peak were sought only at the computed instants, the error for purely harmonic motion of period T would be at most 1 - cos(π/100) ≈ 0.05 %; however, the relative velocity of long-period systems (≈ -u̇g, where u̇g is the ground velocity) and the absolute acceleration also contain high frequencies of the ground motion, so their peak falls between two computed time instants (error down to -1.6 % for Sv with Δtrec = 0.02). Therefore, in every step in which the derivative of a quantity changes sign (u̇ for Sd, ü for Sv, dü/dt for Sa, düabs/dt for Saa) the program finds the zero of the derivative, i.e. the instant at which the derivative equals zero, and computes the state at that instant with the same exact solution, so the remaining peak error is negligible (verified: ≤ 2·10-6 relative).

Newmark (constant average acceleration, γ = 1/2, β = 1/4) and the central difference method (CDM) are offered for comparison; their default integration time step is Δt ≤ T/20, so the CDM stability condition (Δt < T/π) is met (periods for which it is not met with the given step are computed with Newmark, with a note). Both methods change the period of vibration: Newmark elongates it, T̄/T = (ω·Δt/2)/arctan(ω·Δt/2) ≈ 1 + (ω·Δt)2/12, and the CDM shortens it, T̄/T = (ω·Δt/2)/arcsin(ω·Δt/2) ≈ 1 - (ω·Δt)2/24, where T̄ is the numerically obtained period, T the exact natural period, ω = 2π/T the circular frequency of the oscillator and Δt the integration time step; for Δt = T/20 this is about +0.8 % and -0.4 % ([1] §5.5, Fig. 5.5.2; [4] §9.4.3, Fig. 9.6). The period error causes a phase error which, without damping, accumulates from cycle to cycle, so the program prints with the results the measured largest deviation of Sd from the Nigam-Jennings solution with the same integration time step and a recommendation.

The numerical integration step is set by the user in one of two ways; for every period T the whole accelerogram is integrated. (1) Condition Δt ≤ T/n: for every period T the step Δt = Δtrec/m, m = ⌈n·Δtrec/T⌉ is adopted, so Δt ≤ T/n and Δt ≤ Δtrec (empty field: the recommended value n = 100 for Nigam-Jennings, n = 20 for Newmark and CDM; n ≥ 1 is allowed - n = 1 gives Δt = Δtrec for all periods T ≥ Δtrec - but a small n is not recommended). (2) A given step Δt, the same for all periods: for Δt ≤ Δtrec it is aligned with the record step, m = ⌈Δtrec/Δt⌉, Δt = Δtrec/m; for Δt > Δtrec the record values between the analysis instants are skipped, so characteristic recorded values may be omitted (warning with the results). With an aligned step every recorded value is an analysis instant, and ag is interpolated linearly between them (m - integer, ⌈x⌉ - the smallest integer ≥ x). A smaller n increases the period error of the Newmark and CDM methods, and for periods with Δt ≥ T/π CDM is unstable, so those periods are computed with Newmark (note with the results).

After the end of the record ag decreases linearly to zero over one step Δtrec (the record is padded with one zero, so the excitation does not depend on the integration time step), and then one more period T of free vibration (ag = 0) is computed, because the peak may occur after the end of the record. Very short periods (T < Δtrec/100) are treated as a rigid system: the relative motion is zero and Saa = Spa = max|ag|. The condition Δt ≤ T/n is honoured up to the computational limit of 107 integration steps for one period (the whole accelerogram and one period of free vibration); when this limit reduces the number of sub-steps m, the requested and the applied step are printed with the results.

  2. Zadajte granice md, kd, cd (dugmad „↻ Izračunaj opseg …” ih popunjavaju iz μ, α i ζd), ograničenje ζd,min-ζd,max i početnu tačku x0.
  3. Izaberite opciju optimizacije 1-8 (za opciju 8 i opseg frekvencija i oblik amplitude F0(ω)) i kliknite „▶ Izračunaj”.

Analize i metode

Ustaljeni odgovor sistema sa TMD-om
Primarni sistem (m, k, c) i TMD (md, kd, cd) vezan za primarnu masu; pobuda je sila F(t) na primarnoj masi ili ubrzanje tla ag(t).
(K - p2·M + i·p·C)·X = F̂ , M = [m 0; 0 md] , K = [k+kd -kd; -kd kd] , C = [c+cd -cd; -cd cd] ; Am = |X1|

X = [X1, X2]T - kompleksne amplitude primarne mase i TMD-a, i - imaginarna jedinica, p - kružna frekvencija pobude; F̂ = [F0, 0]T za silu, a F̂ = [-m·Ag, -md·Ag]T za ubrzanje tla (odgovor u odnosu na tlo); hod TMD-a (pomeranje mase TMD-a u odnosu na primarnu masu) je |X2 - X1|. Pretpostavke: linearan sistem, samo ustaljeno harmonijsko stanje.

Optimizacija i opcije 1-8
  • Optimizacija 1-7: najmanja amplituda primarne mase Am pri zadatoj kružnoj frekvenciji pobude p; 8 (minimaks): najmanji maksimum Am(ω) u opsegu ω = α8·ω0 (N tačaka), uz F0 = const, F0(ω) = me·e·ω2 (me - ekscentrična masa, e - ekscentricitet) ili F0(ω) iz txt fajla (promenljiva amplituda samo za pobudu silom).
  • Granice: md, kd, cd (mogu se popuniti iz μ = md/m, α = ωd/ω0 i ζd,min-ζd,max), ograničenje ζd,min-ζd,max; početna tačka x0.
  • Kontrole: (opt. 1-7) SDOF rešenje za md, cd, kd → 0; (opt. 8, F0 = const) poređenje sa rešenjem Den Hartoga (sila), odnosno Vorbertona (tlo): f = 1/(1 + μ), ζd = √(3μ/(8(1 + μ))), odnosno f = √(1 - μ/2)/(1 + μ), ζd = √(3μ/(8(1 + μ)(1 - μ/2))) (f = ωd/ω0; ωd, ω0 - kružne frekvencije TMD-a i primarnog sistema; μ = md/m; m, md - njihove mase).

Naziv opcije navodi postupak u programu, a u zagradi MATLAB ekvivalent:

  • 1-4 (isti postupak): pretraga po mreži od N3 tačaka (N vrednosti svakog od parametara md, cd, kd u njihovim granicama), pa Nelder-Mead iz najbolje tačke mreže i iz x0 + završno poboljšanje rešenja;
  • 5 i 6 (isti postupak): više nasumičnih početnih tačaka (prva je x0) + Nelder-Mead + završno poboljšanje najboljeg rešenja (tabela pokretanja prikazuje rešenja pre završnog poboljšanja, a red ⭐ konačni optimum);
  • 7 (hibridna): Nelder-Mead sa malim brojem iteracija iz nasumičnih početnih tačaka, pa iz najboljeg rešenja Nelder-Mead + završno poboljšanje + još jedan Nelder-Mead; izbor 1 / 2 (oznake za poređenje sa MATLAB-om: ga / simulannealbnd) ne menja postupak - genetski algoritam i simulirano kaljenje se ne izvršavaju;

Nelder-Mead pomera simpleks od n + 1 tačaka (refleksija, širenje, skupljanje) bez izvoda funkcije; Pattern Search ispituje tačke u koordinatnim pravcima ±ej i smanjuje korak kad nijedna nije bolja. Van granica md, cd, kd funkcija cilja dobija vrlo veliku vrednost, a ograničenje ζd,min-ζd,max ulazi kaznenim članom J = Am + Aref·1012·Δζd2 (Δζd - prekoračenje granice, Aref - referentna amplituda).

Kontrola 1 (isključen čekboks „Uključeno prigušenje primarnog sistema”) daje c = 0 i ζd,min = 0; granice cd i ζd,max ostaju kako su upisane. Podešavanje za proveru: c = 0, ζd,min = 0, ζd,max = 0,05.

Den Hartogovo rešenje u izvornom obliku [1, str. 130-131]: (cd/cc)2 = 3μ/(8(1 + μ)3), cc = 2·md·ω0 - srednja vrednost dva uslova horizontalne tangente krive Am(ω) u fiksnim tačkama P i Q; uz optimalno podešavanje ωd = ω0/(1 + μ) to daje ζd = cd/(2·md·ωd) = √(3μ/(8(1 + μ))). Den Hartogovo i Vorbertonovo rešenje važe samo za konstantnu amplitudu pobude (F0, odnosno Ag = const).

General notes

The tab finds the optimal parameters md, cd, kd of a tuned mass damper (TMD) on a primary single-degree-of-freedom system under harmonic excitation, from the exact steady-state response of the two-degree-of-freedom system.

  • Units: m, k, c, F0 (Ag) and p are entered in one consistent system (e.g. t, kN/m, t/s, kN or kg, N/m, kg/s, N; time in s); Am, forces, ω and T in the results are in the same system. The default values are consistent in both systems listed.

How to work

  1. Enter the primary system m, k, c (or take it from the Dynamic Response Analysis tab for n = 1; for an undamped system enter c = 0 - an empty field is not accepted) and the excitation: a force F0·sin(p·t) or a ground acceleration Ag·sin(p·t).
  2. Set the bounds of md, kd, cd (the “↻ Calculate … range” buttons fill them from μ, α and ζd), the constraint ζd,min-ζd,max and the starting point x0.
  3. Choose optimisation option 1-8 (for option 8 also the frequency band and the form of the amplitude F0(ω)) and click “▶ Calculate”.

Analyses and methods

Steady-state response of the system with a TMD
Primary system (m, k, c) and the TMD (md, kd, cd) attached to the primary mass; the excitation is a force F(t) on the primary mass or a ground acceleration ag(t).
(K - p2·M + i·p·C)·X = F̂ , M = [m 0; 0 md] , K = [k+kd -kd; -kd kd] , C = [c+cd -cd; -cd cd] ; Am = |X1|

X = [X1, X2]T - complex amplitudes of the primary mass and the TMD, i - imaginary unit, p - forcing circular frequency; F̂ = [F0, 0]T for a force and F̂ = [-m·Ag, -md·Ag]T for a ground acceleration (response relative to the ground); the TMD stroke (displacement of the TMD mass relative to the primary mass) is |X2 - X1|. Assumptions: linear system, steady harmonic state only.

The response is obtained exactly, by solving this complex system in the frequency domain - without numerical integration of the equations of motion. The time plots u(t) are drawn from the complex amplitudes at the instants ti = (i - 1)·Δt, so the Δt field only sets the density of plot points, not the accuracy of the results.

Optimisation and options 1-8
  • Optimisation 1-7: minimum primary-mass amplitude Am at the given p; 8 (minimax): minimum of the peak Am(ω) over the band ω = α8·ω0 (N points), with F0 = const, F0(ω) = me·e·ω2 (me - eccentric mass, e - eccentricity) or F0(ω) from a txt file (variable amplitude for force excitation only).
  • Bounds: md, kd, cd (can be filled from μ = md/m, α = ωd/ω0 and ζd,min-ζd,max), constraint ζd,min-ζd,max; starting point x0.
  • Checks: (opt. 1-7) SDOF solution for md, cd, kd → 0; (opt. 8, F0 = const) comparison with Den Hartog (force) and Warburton (ground): f = 1/(1 + μ), ζd = √(3μ/(8(1 + μ))), and f = √(1 - μ/2)/(1 + μ), ζd = √(3μ/(8(1 + μ)(1 - μ/2))) (f = ωd/ω0; ωd, ω0 - circular frequencies of the TMD and the primary system; μ = md/m; m, md - their masses). Check 1 (checkbox) only removes the damping of the primary system (c = 0, ζd,min = 0) for comparison; independently of it, the “Model accuracy check” is always performed (see below).

Procedures: the objective is Am (options 1-7) or max Am(ω) over the band (option 8); no gradient is used. Each option name gives the procedure run by the program, with the MATLAB equivalent in brackets:

  • 1-4 (same procedure): N3 grid + Nelder-Mead from the best grid point and from x0 + refinement;
  • 5 and 6 (same procedure): multiple random starts (the first from x0) + Nelder-Mead + refinement of the best (the table of runs shows the solutions before the final refinement, and the ⭐ row the final optimum);
  • 7 (hybrid): random starts + quick Nelder-Mead, then from the best Nelder-Mead + refinement + final Nelder-Mead; the genetic algorithm / simulated annealing choice does not change the procedure;
  • 8 (minimax): grid search over N3 points, with max Am(ω) evaluated on a sparser set of frequencies; then Nelder-Mead from the 8 best grid points and from x0, pattern search and additional starting points (among them the Den Hartog or Warburton solution).

Final refinement: Nelder-Mead restarted from the solution obtained + pattern search. Nelder-Mead moves a simplex of n + 1 points (reflection, expansion, contraction) without derivatives; pattern search polls points in the coordinate directions ±ej and reduces the step when none is better. Outside the bounds of md, cd, kd the objective takes a very large value, and the constraint ζd,min-ζd,max enters by the penalty J = Am + Aref·1012·Δζd2 (Δζd - violation of the bound, Aref - reference amplitude).

At a single frequency (options 1-7) the optimum normally lies at the lower bound ζd,min: an undamped tuned TMD cancels the primary response (antiresonance, kd/md = p2), so ζd,min is a design decision, not a result.

Model accuracy check (always, options 1-7): Am from the 2-DOF solution with md, cd, kd → 0 is compared with the SDOF solution Am = λ·F0/k (force) or Am = λ·m·Ag/k (ground acceleration, displacement relative to the ground); λ = 1/√((1 - η2)2 + (2ζη)2) - dynamic magnification factor, η = p/ω0, ω0 = √(k/m), ζ = c/(2·m·ω0) - damping ratio of the primary system; m, k, c - mass, stiffness and damping coefficient of the primary system, F0 - force amplitude, Ag - ground acceleration amplitude, p - excitation angular frequency. Check 1 (checkbox “Primary system damping enabled” cleared) gives c = 0 and ζd,min = 0; the bounds of cd and ζd,max stay as entered. Settings for the check: c = 0, ζd,min = 0, ζd,max = 0.05.

Den Hartog solution in its original form [1, pp. 130-131]: (cd/cc)2 = 3μ/(8(1 + μ)3), cc = 2·md·ω0 - the average of the two conditions of a horizontal tangent of Am(ω) at the fixed points P and Q; with the optimum tuning ωd = ω0/(1 + μ) this gives ζd = cd/(2·md·ωd) = √(3μ/(8(1 + μ))). The Den Hartog and Warburton solutions apply only to a constant excitation amplitude (F0 or Ag = const).

Results and display

Results: optimal parameters, Am with and without TMD, TMD amplitude and stroke, connection force; plots of the steady-state u(t), Am(ω), Am versus parameters and vector animation (options 1-7), convergence (options 1-4 and 7); for option 8, Am(ω) without and with TMD, F0(ω) and the Den Hartog/Warburton comparison; XML, plots to JPG and TXT.

  • Limitations: linear SDOF primary system, steady harmonic state only; Den Hartog and Warburton apply to an undamped primary system.
  • The MATLAB names in brackets are for comparison only; the program does not call MATLAB functions.

  3. Izaberite funkciju cilja (1-20), interval (ceo ili t1-t2), optimizator (1-9) i način (simultana ili sekvencijalna optimizacija).
  4. Zadajte pobudu, korak numeričke integracije Δt, korak zapisa pobude Δtzapis (prazno = Δt; usklađivanje koraka i preporuka - kao u tabu Dinamička analiza odgovora, Pomoć, „Korak numeričke integracije i korak zapisa dejstva”), numeričku integraciju i početne uslove, pa kliknite „▶ Optimizuj”.

Analize i metode

Funkcija cilja (20 opcija)
J = Σč ač·Jč , Jč = √(Σi wi·ri2 / Σi wi) ili Σi wi·ri / Σi wi , ri = mera(xi sa TMD-om)/mera(xi bez TMD-a)

Optimizatori (9 opcija)

Particle Swarm Optimization - roj čestica; brzina čestice zavisi od njenog najboljeg i globalno najboljeg položaja (inercija opada od 0,9 do 0,4, c1 = c2 = 2). Differential Evolution - mutacija razlikom vektora populacije i binomno ukrštanje (rand/1/bin, F = 0,8, CR = 0,9). Simulated Annealing - prihvata i lošije rešenje sa verovatnoćom exp(-ΔJ/T), uz eksponencijalno hlađenje T. Pattern Search - direktna pretraga po koordinatnim pravcima sa promenljivim korakom. Nelder-Mead - lokalni simpleks postupak; u kombinacijama „…

U svakom koraku globalni postupak izvodi Niter,k = round(0,7·Niter) iteracija (Niter - upisani „Maks. broj iteracija”; najmanje 1). Obim pretrage: PSw i DE - Niter generacija populacije veličine Npop („Veličina populacije”); SA i PSe - Niter·Npop koraka. NM kao samostalan postupak polazi iz središta oblasti pretrage, tj. sredine opsega svakog parametra (najviše 3000 iteracija), a dorada „… + NM” iz rešenja globalne metode (najviše 1000 iteracija).

Granice i referentno rešenje

Granice: md = μ·M* (M* = φT·M·φ/φj2 - modalna masa izabranog tona normiranog na 1 u stepenu slobode TMD-a, φj - vrednost oblika u tom stepenu slobode, μ - odnos masa), ωd = f·ω (ω - kružna frekvencija tog tona, f - odnos frekvencija), ζd.

Izvori: [8], [9].

Pobuda i početni uslovi

Rezultati i prikaz

Rezultati: optimalni md, cd, kd, redukcija odgovora, hod i sila TMD-a, matrice i frekvencije sistema bez i sa TMD-ovima; grafici u, u̇, ü bez TMD-a i sa TMD-om; uz Model 2D/3D animacija bez TMD-a i sa TMD-om (u, u̇, ü, presečne sile, reakcije); XML, TXT izveštaj, grafici JPG i TXT.

Ograničenja: linearan sistem; samo direktna numerička integracija (DNI), jer TMD-ovi čine prigušenje sistema neklasičnim.

General notes

The tab optimises one or more TMDs on a multi-degree-of-freedom system in the time domain: for the chosen excitation it finds md, cd, kd that reduce the chosen response measure most, relative to the response without TMD.

  • Units: M, K, C, the TMD bounds, Δt and the excitation are entered in one consistent system; with the model from the Model tab, the units of the model apply. The results (md, cd, kd, u, u̇, ü, forces) are in the same system.

How to work

  1. Enter M, K, C manually or click “📐 Load data from the Model tab”.
  2. Activate TMDs at the chosen DOFs (only translational ones when linked to the Model) and set the bounds; the “↻ Calculate all ranges” button computes them from μ, f and ζd for the selected mode.
  3. Choose the objective function (1-20), the interval (whole record or t1-t2), the optimiser (1-9) and the mode (simultaneous or sequential optimisation).
  4. Define the excitation, the numerical integration step Δt, the excitation record step Δtrec (empty = Δt; step alignment and recommendation - as in the Dynamic Response Analysis tab, Help, “Numerical integration step and load record step”), the numerical integration and the initial conditions, then click “▶ Optimise”.

Analyses and methods

System with TMDs and time-history response

Each active TMD adds one DOF (mass md) connected by a spring kd and a damper cd to the chosen DOF of the structure; the TMDs are independent of each other. The extended system M·ü + C·u̇ + K·u = F is solved by direct numerical integration (Newmark or the central difference method, as in the Dynamic Response Analysis tab) with the time step Δt set by the user. For the central difference method the program checks the stability condition Δt < Tmin/π = 2/ωmax before the calculation (Tmin - shortest natural period, ωmax - highest circular frequency of the coupled system - structure + TMDs - for the stiffest parameter combinations within the search bounds) and rejects the calculation if it is not satisfied; after the integration it checks whether the response diverges. The Newmark method (constant average acceleration, γ = 1/2, β = 1/4) is unconditionally stable but elongates the period: ΔT/T ≈ (ω·Δt)2/12 (ω = 2π/T - circular frequency of the mode, T - its period); for Δt = T/20 this is about 0.8 % [1, §5.5]. Modal superposition is not offered: the damping matrix C = Cs + Cd (Cs - structural damping, Cd - TMD dampers) is in general not classical (C·M-1·K = K·M-1·C does not hold), so the modal equations do not decouple.

Objective function (20 options)
J = Σc ac·Jc , Jc = √(Σi wi·ri2 / Σi wi) or Σi wi·ri / Σi wi , ri = measure(xi with TMD)/measure(xi without TMD)

c - term of the objective, ac - term coefficient (1, β, or α and 1 - α in combinations), wi - weight of DOF i, xi - displacement u, velocity u̇, acceleration ü or inter-storey drift Δui = ui - ui-1; the measure is the RMS value √(Σx2/N) (N - number of integration instants in the window), the peak value max|x|, ∫|x|dt or ∫x2dt over the whole record or over t1-t2. Without TMD, J = J₀ - the reference value obtained when the with/without-TMD ratio equals 1 in every included term. J₀ is the sum of the term coefficients - J₀ = 1 for single-term objectives and for the combinations with α and 1 - α (FC-18 to FC-20), and J₀ = 1 + β for FC-5, FC-12 and FC-17 (e.g. J₀ = 2 for β = 1). J < J₀ means that the TMD reduces the selected aggregate measure; it does not mean that every response time history is smaller.

Optimisers (9 options)

Particle Swarm Optimization - a swarm of particles; the particle velocity depends on its own best and the global best position (inertia decreasing from 0.9 to 0.4, c1 = c2 = 2). Differential Evolution - mutation by a difference of population vectors and binomial crossover (rand/1/bin, F = 0.8, CR = 0.9). Simulated Annealing - also accepts a worse solution with probability exp(-ΔJ/T), with exponential cooling of T. Pattern Search - direct search in the coordinate directions with a variable step. Nelder-Mead - a local simplex method; in the “… + NM” combinations it refines the solution of the global method. The global methods are stochastic - a repeated run may give a slightly different optimum. Sequential optimisation optimises the TMDs one at a time, simultaneous optimisation all together.

Sequential optimisation: the TMDs are added one by one in the given order (a permutation of the active DOFs); previously optimised TMDs remain in the system with fixed parameters while the next one is optimised. In each step the global method uses Niter,k = round(0.7·Niter) iterations (Niter - the entered “Max. number of iterations”; at least 1). Search effort: PSw and DE - Niter generations of a population of size Npop (“Population size”); SA and PSe - Niter·Npop steps. Pattern Search starts from the best of 6 random points, doubles the step after a success and halves it otherwise - it is essentially a local method. NM alone starts from the centre of the search domain - the midpoint of each parameter range (at most 3000 iterations), and the “… + NM” refinement from the solution of the global method (at most 1000 iterations).

Bounds and reference solution

Bounds: md = μ·M* (M* = φT·M·φ/φj2 - modal mass of the selected mode normalised to 1 at the TMD degree of freedom, φj - mode value at that DOF, μ - mass ratio), ωd = f·ω (ω - circular frequency of that mode, f - frequency ratio), ζd. Reference values of f and ζd are given by Den Hartog (force) or Warburton (accelerogram) for μ* = md/M* (expressions in the 2-DOF TMD sub-tab).

Excitation and initial conditions

Excitation: forces from txt files, accelerogram (with a scale factor) F = -M·ι·ag (ι - influence vector: without the Model ι = 1 for every DOF, with the Model 1 for translations in the accelerogram direction you choose and 0 otherwise; ag - ground acceleration; for a diagonal M: Fi = -mii·ιi·ag), or Model load cases and combinations; initial conditions of the primary system u0, u̇0 and the initial state of the TMD by choice: uTMD(0) = 0, u̇TMD(0) = 0 (the TMD mass is at rest, the stroke s = uTMD - u has s(0) = -u0, ṡ(0) = -u̇0 of the node, the TMD spring is initially stretched) or s(0) = 0, ṡ(0) = 0 (uTMD(0) = u0, u̇TMD(0) = u̇0 - the structure displaced together with the TMD); the choice changes the optimum for free vibration.

Results and display

Results: optimal md, cd, kd, response reduction, TMD stroke and force, system matrices and frequencies without and with TMDs; u, u̇, ü plots without and with TMD; with the Model, 2D/3D animation without and with TMD (u, u̇, ü, internal forces, reactions); XML, TXT report, plots to JPG and TXT.

Limitations: linear system; DNI only, because a TMD makes damping non-classical.

  2. Izaberite prethodnu obradu, parametre detekcije vrhova i broj Welch segmenata K; za akcelerogram označite „Signal je akcelerogram” i zadajte množilac c i ubrzanje g.
  3. Kliknite „▶ Izračunaj FFT”.

Analize i metode

Prethodna obrada i FFT

Prethodna obrada signala (opcije, podrazumevano uključene): uklanjanje linearnog trenda i srednje vrednosti, Hanov prozor (smanjuje curenje spektra; bez njega se primenjuje pravougaoni prozor).

Spektri: jednostrani amplitudni spektar, kvadrat amplitudnog spektra |A(f)|2 i spektralna gustina snage (PSD) periodogramom i Welch metodom.

Spektri se računaju brzom Furijeovom transformacijom (FFT), Cooley-Tukey postupkom sa osnovom 2 (radix-2), uz dopunjavanje signala nulama do najmanjeg stepena broja 2 koji nije manji od N (NFFT odbiraka) [8, str. 132, pogl. 6]. Normiranje (jednostrani spektri, bez faktora 2 na f = 0 i na Nikvistovoj liniji):

  • amplitudni spektar |A(fk)| = 2|Xk|/Σwi (vrh ≈ vršna amplituda sinusoide);
  • periodogram G(fk) = 2|Xk|²/(Fs·Σwi²); Welch G(fk) = 2⟨|Xk|²⟩/(Fs·Σwi²), ⟨⟩ - srednja vrednost po segmentima (wi - Hanov prozor dužine segmenta, NFFT → nfft);
  • Parsevalova teorema [8, str. 132]: ∫G df = σ² (tačno bez prozora, približno sa Hanovim prozorom), σ² - srednji kvadrat obrađenog signala (varijansa kad je srednja vrednost uklonjena);
  • Xk = Σi=0N-1 xi·wi·e-j2πki/NFFT - diskretna Furijeova transformacija (DFT) signala pomnoženog prozorom i dopunjenog nulama; xi - signal posle prethodne obrade; wi - težine prozora (Hanov prozor wi = ½(1 - cos(2πi/(N - 1))), bez prozora wi = 1); Σwi - zbir težina; Σwi² - energija prozora; Fs = 1/Δt.

Dužina segmenta N/K, preklapanje 50 %, ≈ 2K - 1 osrednjenih segmenata, Hanov prozor (N - broj tačaka, K - broj segmenata, ograničen na K ≤ 64 i N/K ≥ 8).

Tabela daje f i ω dominantnog vrha i do 4 sledeća najveća.

IA = π/(2g)·∫0T a(t)2 dt , a(t) = c·x(t) ; D5-95 = t95 - t5

g - ubrzanje Zemljine teže u istom sistemu kao a(t), polje „g”; a(t) - ubrzanje, x(t) - učitani signal bez obrade, c - množilac ubrzanja, T - trajanje zapisa; integral trapeznim pravilom; IA je u jedinici brzine tog sistema. t5 i t95 su trenuci u kojima IA(t) dostiže 5 % i 95 % ukupne vrednosti, a D5-95 je značajno trajanje - trajanje jakog dela zemljotresnog kretanja tla [7].

General notes

The tab gives the frequency content of a signal - a structural response or an accelerogram: the amplitude spectrum, the power spectral density, the dominant frequencies and, for an accelerogram, the Arias intensity.

  • Units: the signal, Δt and g are entered in one consistent system; the frequency f is in the reciprocal time unit (Hz only if Δt is in seconds), ω = 2π·f, and amplitudes are in the signal unit. The default g = 9.81 is in SI.

How to work

  1. Load the signal from a txt file (a signal column and Δt, or t and signal columns) or import it from the Dynamic Response Analysis tab (case, DOF, u, u̇ or ü, relative or absolute).
  2. Choose the pre-processing, the peak detection parameters and the number of Welch segments K; for an accelerogram tick “The signal is an accelerogram” and set the multiplier c and g.
  3. Click “▶ Calculate FFT”.

Analyses and methods

Pre-processing and FFT

Pre-processing (options, on by default): linear detrending, mean removal, Hann window (reduces spectral leakage; otherwise rectangular).

The linear trend is the least-squares line a + b·i (i - sample index, a and b - line coefficients); since the line has a constant term, after its removal Σsi = 0 (si - processed signal), so a separate mean removal then has no effect. Without detrending, the linear trend appears in the spectrum as spurious content at the lowest frequencies (spectral leakage). Hann window: the main lobe of the spectrum is twice as wide as with the rectangular window (the peak is wider), and the side lobes, i.e. the leakage into distant lines, are much lower. Since the amplitude spectrum is scaled by Σwi, the peak of a sinusoid whose frequency lies exactly on a spectral line has the same height with and without the window; when the frequency falls between lines, the Hann peak is closer to the true amplitude (error up to ≈ 15 % versus ≈ 36 % without a window, for a signal without zero padding). For the PSD the on-line peak is 1.5 times lower with the Hann window (equivalent noise bandwidth of 1.5 lines), while the area under the peak is approximately preserved.

Spectra: single-sided amplitude spectrum, squared amplitude spectrum |A(f)|2 and power spectral density (PSD) by periodogram and by Welch's method.

Cooley-Tukey radix-2 FFT with zero padding to the next power of two (NFFT). Scaling (single-sided spectra, without the factor 2 at f = 0 and at the Nyquist line):

  • amplitude spectrum |A(fk)| = 2|Xk|/Σwi (peak ≈ peak amplitude of a sinusoid);
  • periodogram G(fk) = 2|Xk|²/(Fs·Σwi²); Welch G(fk) = 2⟨|Xk|²⟩/(Fs·Σwi²), ⟨⟩ - mean over segments (wi - Hann window of segment length, NFFT → nfft);
  • Parseval's theorem: ∫G df = σ² (exact without a window, approximate with the Hann window), σ² - mean square of the processed signal (the variance when the mean is removed);
  • Xk = Σi=0N-1 xi·wi·e-j2πki/NFFT - DFT of the signal multiplied by the window and zero-padded; xi - signal after pre-processing; wi - window weights (Hann window wi = ½(1 - cos(2πi/(N - 1))), no window wi = 1); Σwi - sum of the weights; Σwi² - window energy; Fs = 1/Δt.

Assumptions: constant sampling period Δt - the time between neighbouring samples (a file whose time column has no constant step or goes back somewhere is not loaded); the highest frequency in the spectrum is the Nyquist frequency fN = 1/(2·Δt) - signal components of higher frequencies appear in the spectrum at wrong, lower frequencies (aliasing); the spacing of neighbouring spectral lines (frequency resolution) is Δf = 1/(NFFT·Δt).

Welch's method
A signal of N points is split into segments of length N/K with 50 % overlap (here K = 3, so 2K - 1 = 5 segments); each segment is multiplied by the Hann window wi, and the periodograms of the segments are averaged.

Segment length N/K, 50 % overlap, ≈ 2K - 1 averaged segments, Hann window (N - number of points, K - number of segments, limited to K ≤ 64 and N/K ≥ 8). Averaging reduces the scatter (variance) of the PSD estimate at the cost of a coarser frequency resolution, because a segment is K times shorter than the signal.

Dominant frequencies

On all four spectra the peaks are picked by prominence (in % of the maximum) and minimum spacing Δf; the peak frequency is refined by a parabola through the logarithms of three adjacent bins. The table gives f and ω of the dominant peak and of up to 4 next largest.

A peak is a line larger than both neighbours (the end lines of the spectrum are candidates if larger than their neighbour). It is shown if both its height and its prominence are at least p % of the largest value of the spectrum; prominence is the height of the peak above the higher of the two lowest values to its left and right, up to the first higher peak or the end of the spectrum. Of peaks closer than Δf the larger one is kept; Δf should be much smaller than the Nyquist frequency fN = 1/(2·Δt), otherwise at most one peak remains.

Arias intensity

Computed if the signal is flagged as an accelerogram, from the raw signal times the scale factor:

IA = π/(2g)·∫0T a(t)2 dt , a(t) = c·x(t) ; D5-95 = t95 - t5

g - gravitational acceleration in the same system as a(t), field “g”; a(t) - acceleration, x(t) - the loaded signal without pre-processing, c - acceleration multiplier, T - record length; trapezoidal rule; IA is in the velocity unit of that system. t5 and t95 are the times at which IA(t) reaches 5 % and 95 % of the total, and D5-95 is the duration of the strong part of the record.

  • Limitations: Hann is the only window function (on or off), and Welch segments always use it; at least 16 signal points.
